Pay Rate/Range: $58,333 - $62,803 (10 month position). Salary offers are determined based upon final candidate qualifications and experience; the budget for the position; and application of fair, equitable and consistent pay practices at the University. The full salary range is $57,917 - $102,917 (10 month position).

Work Location: Recreation Center - 1110

Working Days and Hours: M-Th 12 pm - 6 pm, F 10 am - 4 pm for clinic hours. Some Friday night game coverage. Most Sundays (variable hours)

Brief Summary of Job Duties:
Under the direction of the Head Athletic Trainer, the Assistant Athletic Trainer is responsible for the design, implementation, coordination, and the general supervision of the Recreation Department's concussion protocol program for sport clubs. Supervise (under the direction of the Head Athletic Trainer) the prevention, evaluation, treatment and care of all sport club related injuries. Establish a minimum standard of care for concussions or mild traumatic brain injuries including athlete education/risk factors, baseline testing, and return to play protocol with medical oversight from UCSB Student Health. When necessary make referrals to appropriate medical personnel. Recondition and rehabilitate athletes on referral from physicians through the use of appropriate physical agents and therapeutic devices. Update coaches/staff regularly on the status of injured athletes. Assist in the operation of the athletic training facility. Maintain records and files on all aspects of the Sport Club Program. Help develop and supervise hourly student athletic trainers. Acts as a liaison between physicians and athletes, physicians and coaches, athlete and coaches regarding an athlete's status for practice or competition. The Athletic Trainer must maintain NATABOC Certification under guidelines establishes by the National Athletic Trainer Association, including on-going continuing education units; abide by OSHA and HIPPA guidelines.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in related area
  • BOC Certification - Candidate must be a certified Athletic Trainer as recognized by successfully passing Board of Certification (BOC) for the Athletic Trainer exam. Current or attained within 3 months of start date

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in related field preferred. (e.g. Athletic Training, Sports Science, Exercise Science, Kinesiology). Or 6+ years experience.
  • 1-3 years experience in related field.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Thorough skills associated with athletic injury prevention and the administration of therapeutic modalities, devices, and rehabilitation techniques, as well as of first-aid, athletic equipment, and injury assessment and treatment.
  • Ability to maintain discretion and confidentiality in handling sensitive matters involving athletic injuries and treatments.
  • Thorough knowledge of electronic medical records systems.
  • Strong ability to work in a highly collaborative manner with others, including athletes, team physicians, faculty, staff and others in the athletic department.
  • Strong skills necessary to communicate verbally and in writing.
  • Strong ability to organize and prioritize work assignments and complete assignments within required timelines.
  • Strong manual therapy skills applicable to orthopedics and sports medicine.

Job Functions and Percentages of Time:

  • 35% Concussion Management - Spearhead the development of a detailed written plan outlining the concussion-management strategy to include a baseline evaluation of high impact athletes, collection of neurologic history with symptoms and physical examination and objective measures of neurocognitive performance and motor control. Educate all sport club teams, athletes, coaches and staff on the aspects of concussion: prevention, mechanism, recognition and referral, appropriate return to participation, physical and cognitive restrictions for concussed athletes, and ramifications of improper concussion management. Create a method of documentation for the athlete's understanding of concussive signs and symptoms and their responsibility to report a concussion. Assist in the development of a return to play protocol for concussed athletes. Ensure proper documentation of the concussion evaluation, management, treatment, return to participation progression and physician communications. Manage and administer baseline testing to all Sport Club athletes and oversee post injury assessments. Develop with Student Health a standard concussion home-instruction form to be used consistently for all concussed athletes. Identify and adopt standard practice limitations and guidelines to establish the standard of care for managing concussions and other brain injuries.
  • 30% Injury Care and Prevention - Provide timely first aid and emergency treatment to injured athletes at official practices and contests on-campus. Initiates injury evaluation, recognition, management, treatment, rehabilitation, and prevention for Sport Club athletes. Provide skilled treatment of athletic injuries utilizing therapeutic modalities, procedures, taping, splinting and other techniques as appropriate for continuing care of athletes. Advise athletes in the selection and fitting of functional braces; design and make bracing and padding as needed, following the rules and restrictions of each sport. Make injury referrals to the appropriate physician or other medical services. Provide for adequate Athletic Training services at practices and games. May include some travel with club sport teams, as needed. Provide athletic training services to injured medium/low impact club sport athletes.
  • 30% Event Coverage - Provides athletic training services for Sport Club on-campus home events and tournaments, which would also include evening and weekend hours. Provide athletic training services for summer sports camps as needed.
  • 5% Miscellaneous - Serve as departmental representative on various committees on campus. Participates in staff meetings, activities and events. Maintain files and records and prepare reports. May be required to perform other duties as assigned.
