GIRMC Medical Laboratory Technician

GENERAL SUMMARY:

Performs high complexity medical laboratory tests, procedures, and analyses to provide data for diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease.

   Under the supervision of a Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendment (CLIA)-designated Clinical Laboratory Manager, performs laboratory testing according to laboratory standards, policies and procedures in a timely thorough manner.

   Analyzes test results and enters data into the computer using laboratory standards, policies and procedures.

   
   

1. 
   

   Performs and analyzes quality control measures to ensure accurate clinical data. Analyzes unacceptable quality control results and troubleshoots shifts or trends as necessary.

   Maintains competency and proficiency on all laboratory instrumentation and procedures; performs and documents preventive maintenance on laboratory instruments and equipment, troubleshooting problems as necessary. Notifies immediate supervisory personnel of equipment/instrument issues and calls Service regarding issues.

   Communicates with coworkers, clients and leadership by transmitting patient cart testing and results, appropriate ideas, information and opinions clearly, concisely and courteously; maintains employee, patient, client and corporate confidentiality.

   Performs general housekeeping tasks to maintain safe work environment; maintains adequate supplies in the work area.

   Assists in training new employees, students, other technical staff and support staff.

   Works collaboratively with all laboratory staff to ensure completion of testing and communication of necessary information to assist testing completion.

   Uses quality improvement processes, programs or outcomes to help improve department operations; assists with LEAN projects.

   Performs service excellence must-haves to achieve an excellent patient/customer experience.

   Basic knowledge in phlebotomy and phlebotomy procedures and ability to perform phlebotomy if required by laboratory facility.

   
   

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Associate's degree in Medical Laboratory Technology or related laboratory science from a two-year accredited college or CLIA- approved Military MLT program required or has earned a bachelor's degree in a chemical, physical or biological science meeting American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) criteria for MLT certification.

OTHER CREDENTIALS / CERTIFICATIONS: ASCP certification as an MLT (ASCP) or equivalency preferred.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

(DOT) - Characterized as medium work requiring exertion of 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or a greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
