JOB DESCRIPTION/DUTIES:
The Corrosion Engineer will serve as a Research and Development (R&D) technical leader supporting NRL. The position focuses on the design, execution, analysis, and documentation of laboratory, physical-scale, and field experiments involving cathodic protection, electrochemical behavior, materials degradation, corrosion monitoring, and environmental effects in seawater and other Navy-relevant conditions.
- Conduct fundamental and applied corrosion research on metallic alloys, coatings, composites, and other materials used on Navy ships, submarines, aircraft, autonomous systems, shore facilities, and related maritime assets.
- Design, construct, configure, and test cathodic protection systems, including impressed-current and sacrificial-anode systems, for maritime structures and representative test platforms.
- Develop, review, and execute Physical Scale Modeling (PSM) test plans for ship and submarine corrosion-control studies, including test configuration, instrumentation requirements, operating conditions, acceptance criteria, and data-collection methods.
- Prepare and validate instrumentation before intensive test periods, including corrosion sensors, reference electrodes, datalogging systems, power supplies, monitoring and control hardware, and associated communications interfaces.
- Stress-test control systems, instrumentation, and data-acquisition configurations prior to and during test execution to identify failure modes, data-quality issues, and test-integrity risks.
- Perform electrochemical testing and analysis, including polarization measurements, impedance spectroscopy, potential/current monitoring, corrosion-rate measurement, and evaluation of cathodic protection behavior.
- Measure, monitor, and quantify corrosion mechanisms, degradation rates, durability, calcareous deposit formation, hydrogen effects, and other material-performance characteristics under Navy-relevant environmental conditions.
- * Plan and conduct seawater, atmospheric, immersion, accelerated-aging, and other environmental exposure experiments to evaluate corrosion performance and protection-system effectiveness.
- Design and evaluate corrosion-monitoring and mitigation instrumentation, sensors, electrical-isolation approaches, tank-inspection systems, underwater ICCP components, wireless devices, and related test hardware.
- Perform corrosion assessments, prognostics, and physical or numerical modeling to predict material degradation, cathodic protection performance, and underwater electromagnetic behavior.
- Analyze experimental datasets using scientific and engineering tools such as MATLAB, Python, COMSOL, OLI Studio, LabVIEW, or equivalent software to identify trends, quantify performance, and validate engineering hypotheses.
- Conduct metallographic, microscopic, chemical, and failure-analysis investigations to characterize corrosion morphology, material condition, degradation mechanisms, and root causes of failure.
- Evaluate the effects of material selection, fabrication, welding, heat treatment, fasteners, crevice geometry, surface condition, and environmental exposure on corrosion behavior and structural integrity.
- Support design and fabrication of scaled models, test fixtures, mockups, piping systems, electrical assemblies, and experimental platforms required for corrosion and cathodic-protection testing.
- Prepare engineering drawings, test procedures, data packages, technical reports, calculations, graphs, and presentations that clearly document test methods, results, conclusions, and technical recommendations.
- Support shipboard, waterfront, shipyard, and field testing as required, including instrumentation setup, inspections, data acquisition, troubleshooting, and post-test analysis.
- Apply applicable Navy, DoD, ASTM, AMPP/NACE, and other technical standards and specifications when planning tests, evaluating corrosion-control systems, and documenting results.
- Maintain rigorous test documentation, configuration control, calibration records, data traceability, and Objective Quality Evidence to support repeatability and technical defensibility of research results.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/EXPERTISE:
- Bachelor's degree in Corrosion Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related engineering/physical-science discipline; advanced degree preferred.
- Minimum of 5+ years of relevant experience in corrosion science, electrochemistry, materials degradation, cathodic protection, or related RDT&E activities in laboratory, field, or maritime environments.
- Strong working knowledge of galvanic and electrochemical corrosion mechanisms, cathodic protection design principles, corrosion monitoring, materials compatibility, and environmental degradation.
- Hands-on experience with electrochemical instrumentation, data acquisition, sensors, control systems, laboratory test equipment, and corrosion/materials characterization techniques.
- Experience developing and executing technically rigorous test plans, experimental procedures, and data-analysis methods for complex engineering experiments.
- Experience with physical-scale testing, instrumented test platforms, seawater or marine-environment testing, or Navy/DoD corrosion-control systems is highly desirable.
- Proficiency with engineering/scientific analysis and modeling tools such as MATLAB, Python, LabVIEW, COMSOL, OLI Studio, or equivalent platforms.
- Ability to troubleshoot instrumentation, test hardware, data-acquisition systems, and experimental anomalies during high-tempo test execution.
- Ability to perform fieldwork in laboratory, waterfront, shipboard, shipyard, and other industrial environments as required.
- Excellent technical writing skills with the ability to prepare clear test plans, engineering analyses, technical reports, and recommendations based on experimental evidence.
- Active Secret security clearance required.
