Overview
SSOE is seeking an experienced and forward-thinking Assistant Controller to help lead our accounting organization as the company continues to grow and evolve. This is an opportunity for a financial professional who enjoys more than closing the books. You will work closely with the Controller, CFO, Finance leadership, and business leaders across SSOE, helping ensure the integrity of our financial operations while improving the processes, systems, controls, and insights that support the business. The role combines technical accounting, financial reporting, operational leadership, people development, process improvement, and strategic support. You will oversee critical accounting functions, help lead monthly and year-end financial reporting, support acquisitions and business integrations, strengthen internal controls, and identify opportunities to make Finance more effective through automation, technology, and better processes. If you're an accounting or finance professional who wants broad responsibility, access to senior leadership, and the opportunity to influence how a growing organization operates, this role offers considerably more than a traditional Assistant Controller position.
AI and Innovation
At SSOE, we don't just talk about the future, we build it. As a leader in industry AI adoption, we empower our team to work smarter by providing responsible access to the industry leading AI Large Language Models, vibe-coding platforms, and securely integrating advanced tools into every role. From day one, you'll receive the training and support needed to leverage AI as a core tool for enhancing productivity, sparking creativity, and streamlining complex workflows.
Responsibilities
The following duties are typical of the position but are not all-encompassing. Responsibilities include those required to deliver excellence through financial integrity and strategic insight. Financial Reporting & Accounting Leadership
Support the Controller in leading SSOE's monthly, quarterly, and year-end accounting and financial reporting processes, ensuring financial information is timely, accurate, complete, and appropriately supported.
- Review financial statements, account reconciliations, schedules, project costs, and other financial information to identify unusual activity, emerging issues, trends, and opportunities requiring management attention.
- Apply sound accounting judgment to complex transactions and ensure accounting practices remain consistent with applicable accounting standards, company policies, and internal controls.
- Maintain appropriate documentation and review standards supporting the integrity and auditability of financial information.
Accounting Operations & Controls
- Provide leadership and oversight across key accounting operations, including accounts payable, payroll, staff accounting, and disbursement-related activities.
- Evaluate accounting workflows, systems, and controls and identify opportunities to improve accuracy, efficiency, consistency, scalability, and risk management.
- Develop, maintain, and improve accounting policies, procedures, internal controls, approval processes, and financial documentation.
- Work proactively with the Controller and other Finance leaders to identify financial and operational risks and implement appropriate controls and corrective actions.
- Support external audit, tax, banking, regulatory, and other financial compliance activities by ensuring accurate schedules, reconciliations, documentation, and timely responses.
Planning & Business Partnership
- Assist with annual budgeting, capital planning, financial analysis, tax planning, and other strategic financial initiatives.
- Partner with leaders across SSOE to explain financial results, evaluate issues, and provide clear, practical recommendations.
- Translate complex accounting and financial information into concise insights that non-financial leaders can understand and act upon.
- Support financial analysis associated with operational initiatives, investments, organizational changes, growth opportunities, and other significant business decisions.
- Build strong working relationships with internal stakeholders and external partners, including auditors, accountants, financial institutions, tax professionals, and other advisers.
Technology, Automation & Continuous Improvement
- Identify opportunities to reduce manual accounting work, eliminate unnecessary steps, improve data quality, shorten reporting cycles, and strengthen financial controls.
- Use Microsoft 365, enterprise financial systems, reporting tools, automation, and appropriate AI-enabled technologies to improve accounting and financial processes.
- Partner with Finance and technology teams to improve reporting, system integrations, data accessibility, and financial workflows.
- Help establish processes that are documented, repeatable, scalable, and not dependent on the knowledge of a single individual.
Leadership & Team Development
- Lead, coach, and develop employees supporting accounting and disbursement functions, establishing clear expectations and accountability while creating opportunities for professional growth.
- Build depth within the accounting organization through cross-training, knowledge sharing, succession planning, and development of future financial leaders.
