About Veeco You probably don't realize it, but what we do at Veeco touches the lives of every person, every day. It's a bold statement, but it's true. From the smartphones in our pockets that access the world's collective knowledge, to the cloud-based services where all that information lives, to high-speed wireless communication and computing power needed to drive artificial intelligence, augmented and virtual reality, gaming and so much more, our technology is all around us. We design, develop, manufacture, and service highly complex, cutting-edge machines used by our customers to create the essential devices that drive the digital age, connect the world, and improve the human experience. Along with the world's leading technology companies, many of which are household names, we help solve their most difficult material science challenges, enabling technologies for a more connected, sustainable, and convenient world. We're looking for material difference-makers to join our growing team. Interested? Learn more at www.veeco.com/careers. OVERVIEW Veeco's wet processing equipment combines precision mechanical design, chemistry delivery, automation, wafer handling, and structures that must perform reliably in demanding semiconductor manufacturing environments. As Manager of Mechanical Engineering, you will operate as a hands-on player-coach: leading and developing the mechanical engineering team while remaining directly engaged in the technical work that moves designs from concept through validation, release, and sustained production. You will step into difficult design reviews, troubleshoot hardware alongside engineers and manufacturing partners, and personally drive high-risk mechanical problems when the situation calls for senior technical judgment. Your work will strengthen execution and design quality as Veeco expands the use of its WaferEtch wet processing technology in advanced semiconductor applications. RESPONSIBILITIES
- Lead, coach, and develop a high-performing mechanical engineering team while remaining an active technical contributor on the team's most complex and business-critical work.
- Own the mechanical architecture of wet processing equipment and personally engage in concept development, design reviews, calculations, component and material selection, prototype evaluation, and troubleshooting for high-risk designs.
- Work side by side with engineers and manufacturing teams to resolve build, test, and field issues, using root cause analysis and hands-on hardware investigation to turn failures into durable design improvements.
- Drive robust mechanical solutions for chemistry delivery, wafer tooling, process chambers, automation interfaces, and structural frames that meet performance, safety, quality, cost, manufacturability, and serviceability requirements.
- Make clear engineering tradeoffs and keep programs moving by identifying technical risk early, removing design roadblocks, and controlling mechanical changes through the product lifecycle.
- Partner directly with Process, Electrical, Software, Operations, Supply Chain, Marketing, and Service teams to translate customer and product requirements into integrated equipment designs.
- Raise the team's technical bar through practical design standards, disciplined reviews, stronger documentation, and coaching that helps engineers solve increasingly complex problems independently.
QUALIFICATIONS Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering and at least 8 years of professional mechanical engineering experience, or a Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering and at least 6 years of professional mechanical engineering experience is required as is3+ years of people management experience with direct reports. Experience designingmechanical systems for complex capital equipment across multiple phases of the product development lifecycle is a must. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- A player-coach leadership style: comfortable moving between one-on-one coaching, resource decisions, detailed design reviews, technical calculations, prototype work, and hands-on troubleshooting.
- Deep mechanical design judgment in complex capital equipment; experience with semiconductor wet processing, single-wafer equipment, chemistry delivery, or related process equipment is preferred.
- Working knowledge of electro-mechanical system architecture and the interfaces among mechanical hardware, controls, sensors, automation, and process requirements.
- Experience selecting materials and surface finishes for aggressive chemical environments; familiarity with wet processing chemistries and cleanroom environments is preferred.
- Experience applying Failure Modes and Effects Analysis, technical risk evaluation, and root cause and corrective action methods to improve design robustness and resolve failures.
- Skilled at designing for safety, manufacturing, and serviceability and at challenging a design constructively when technical evidence points to a better approach.
- Skilled at translating complex technical issues into clear decisions and next steps for engineers, business partners, suppliers, and customers.
