Job Summary

The Duke Healthy Lifestyles Clinic is seeking a compassionate, enthusiastic, and highly team-oriented Advanced Practice Provider (APP) to join our multidisciplinary team caring for children, adolescents, and young adults up to age 23 with obesity. Our team includes medical providers, registered dietitians, physical therapists, mental health professionals, and occupational therapists, with on-site access to pediatric cardiology, endocrinology, and pulmonology.

Our practice is committed to evidence-based lifestyle change and patient-centered care, with particular attention to social drivers of health, weight bias, and stigma that can affect the health and well-being of children and families. We serve a racially and ethnically diverse population, including many families from low-income communities.

Job Eligibility Requirements

Experience

• Prior experience caring for children with obesity is preferred but not required. Likewise, prior experience prescribing anti-obesity medications is not required; the selected provider will receive training in evidence-based obesity pharmacotherapy, as well as evaluation and preparation of patients for bariatric surgery and postoperative care.
• We are especially interested in candidates with training or experience in motivational interviewing or other patient-centered communication approaches. A bilingual provider is strongly preferred.

Education

• Nurse Practitioners:Work requires completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program with a Master's degree in Nursing.

• Physician Assistants: Work requires completion of an accredited Physician Assistant program. A Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree strongly preferred.

Certification

• BLS required.

License

• Nurse Practitioners: Must have current or compact RN licensure & NP approval to practice in the state of North Carolina. National certification as a NP required.
• Physician Assistants: Must be licensed in the state of NC and be certified as a Physician Assistant by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants.

Physical and mental requirements:

• Able toclearly articulate scope of practice, and practices within those guidelines as a Nurse Practitioner / Physician Assistant in the state of North Carolina and within the Duke University Health System.
• Able toindependently seek out resources and work collaboratively to solve complex problems
• Able tocommunicate clearly with patients, families, visitors, healthcare team, physicians, administrators, leadership, and others.
• Able touse sensory and cognitive functions to process and prioritize information, perform health assessments, treatment, and follow-up.
• Able touse fine motor skills
• Able torecord activities, document assessments & interventions; prepare reports and presentations;
• Able touse computer and learn new software programs
• Able toprovide leadership in clinical area of expertise and in meeting organizational goals
• Able tonavigate the Hospital and DUHS to provide clinical expertise to specific patient populations
• Able towithstand prolonged standing and walking with the ability to move or lift at least fifty pounds
• Able toremain focused and organized
• Able towork collaboratively with all levels of personnel

Job Hours

• The position includes eight half-day clinical sessions per week, with clinics operating from 8:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. and 1:00-5:00 p.m.
• Sessions may be clustered into four full clinical days or distributed throughout the week.
• There are no evening or weekend clinical responsibilities. Medical providers share a pager rotation for the rare occurrence of abnormal laboratory results requiring after-hours follow-up.
• The APP will participate in monthly team meetings and weekly brown-bag educational sessions and will have opportunities to contribute to the development of patient education materials, clinical resources, community initiatives, and other projects that advance the care of children and families affected by obesity.
