| Essential Job Duties |
The
Assistant Professor of Large Animal Clinical Skills and Career Success will join a dedicated group of faculty and staff currently teaching large animal clinical skills, medicine and surgery. A combination of models, simulations and farm animals at the Teaching Animal Unit and Reedy Creek Farm are used to facilitate assessments that can be used to develop skills portfolios and investigate best practices in feedback and remediation of clinical skills.
Teaching:
This faculty member will contribute to clinical skills, large animal and career readiness teaching in existing core, elective and selective courses. The faculty member will also have the option to participate in teaching and/or proposing new selective or elective courses. Interested individuals may contribute to ongoing development of house officer and graduate student competency-based training programs and trainee assessments.
Research:
This faculty member will establish an impactful and nationally recognized research program dedicated to advancing Large Animal Clinical Skills educational research. As veterinary curricula globally evolve to meet changing technological, societal, and agricultural needs, this position will drive evidence-based advancements in how veterinary students acquire, refine, and maintain large animal technical and clinical competencies. The faculty member will be expected to investigate current high-priority areas and address critical, unmapped gaps in knowledge within veterinary medical education. The prospective areas of educational research supported by this position include, but are not limited to:
Simulation-Based Learning & Physical Model Innovation: Developing, validating, and optimizing large animal (equine, bovine, and production animal) procedural models, simulators and assessments (i.e. OSCEs, mini-CEX, etc.). A primary research gap in this domain is the critical lack of longitudinal data assessing the long-term transferability of skills from synthetic simulators to live animal clinical scenarios to practice, as well as addressing the historical "small animal bias" in existing commercial simulation tools. Artificial Intelligence (AI) & Digital Workflow Integration: Exploring the integration of generative AI, multimodal large language models, and AI-standardized stakeholders within clinical training and communication workflows. Research will target how to teach students to utilize AI safely, ethically, and responsibly for diagnostic reasoning and uncertainty management, while addressing student adoption challenges, cognitive overreliance, and technological biases. Competency-Based Veterinary Education (CBVE) & Assessment: Designing, implementing, and validating objective, standardized assessment instruments and grading frameworks for psychomotor skills. Research will focus on mapping competencies to pedagogical combinations that offer the highest cost-benefit ratios and efficacy for equine and production animal training. Remediation Strategies & Cognitive Load Management: Developing evidence-based intervention and remediation strategies for students experiencing difficulties with technical proficiency. This includes studying methods to lower student anxiety and ensure safety during the high-stakes transition from low-stress models to live, potentially unpredictable large animals. Spectrum of Care, Ethics, & Community-Engaged Learning: Investigating educational frameworks that prepare students to practice quality medicine across a spectrum of care, particularly in resource-limited, rural, or underserved environments. Research could address how experiential learning in these settings impacts clinical skill acquisition and influences veterinary workforce shortages in production animal medicine. Community-based Education Models & Educator Development: Assessing how the pedagogical characteristics, instructional proficiency, professional identity and career satisfaction of clinical educators affect student learning in off-campus clinical teaching environments. Research will target frameworks for standardizing educator professional development and mentoring ability among non-faculty clinical preceptors. Pipeline Development, Admissions Predictors, & Career Sustainability: Investigating the correlation between holistic DVM admissions criteria (e.g., non-cognitive attributes, rural or agricultural backgrounds, specific pre-veterinary experiences) and long-term career commitment to large animal and food supply veterinary medicine. Research in this domain will target the critical "pipeline leak"-the documented decline in large animal career interest that occurs over the course of the four-year professional curriculum. Prospective studies will explore how educational interventions, early tracking pathways, mentorship frameworks, and systemic support systems can mitigate burnout, bridge the pay-to-debt gap, and ensure the geographic and economic sustainability of the large animal veterinary workforce in rural and underserved areas. Wellbeing, Professional Identity, & Veterinary Humanities: Evaluating the intersections of clinical skills mastery with veterinary humanities, ethical reasoning, and professional identity formation. The program will examine how early, structured competence in large animal handling correlates with student self-care, resilience, and long-term career sustainability.

Qualifications
| Minimum Education and Experience |

- Interest and enthusiasm for training and mentorship, particularly with regard to graduate students, house officers, and/or postdoctoral fellows.
- Comfort and experience working with highly interdisciplinary and collaborative faculty.
