Athletic Trainer I -JeffCo School District

The primary responsibilities for the Athletic Trainer within the JeffCo School District are to provide superior rehabilitative care to injured athletes and patients, educate the public on injury prevention, rehabilitation, wellness and other health-related issues, and maintain the highest standards of care to student athletes under the direction of the team physician.

The Athletic Trainer I is an entry level position in a Career Advancement Program (CAP). Team members in this position may work in a clinical setting or an outreach setting. In a clinical setting, the Athletic Trainer I performs orthopedic evaluation of patients and communicates findings. In an outreach setting, the Athletic Trainer I provides daily medical coverage for trainings, practices and events. As an entry level position, team members in this position receive direct supervision and guidance from higher level Athletic Trainers, supervisors and/or providers regarding proper documentation in medical notes, medical terminology, use of "dot phrases", relationship building and time management.

Status: Full time, 40 hours per week
Shift: Monday-Friday

• Sports Medicine Center Triage Line: one morning shift per week.
• Weekday afternoon and evening coverage for practices and events.
• Weekend coverage for games, tournaments, and special events as assigned.
• Occasional coverage at other Children's Hospital Colorado outreach partnerships and events as assigned.

One morning each week, you'll support athletes and families through our Sports Medicine Triage Line, helping guide care and improve access to specialized services. In the afternoons & weekends, you'll provide on-site athletic training coverage throughout the JeffCO School District, working directly with student-athletes, coaches, and healthcare professionals. Coverage assignments are tailored based on athletic schedules, school needs, and staffing priorities, ensuring each day brings new opportunities and experiences.In this role, you will play a vital part in delivering exceptional sports medicine care by evaluating injuries, developing rehabilitation plans, and helping athletes safely return to competition. You will also serve as a trusted healthcare resource by promoting injury prevention, wellness, and performance enhancement while collaborating closely with physicians and multidisciplinary healthcare teams.

Responsibilities:

Serves as a liaison between family physicians and/or specialists and the school district, athletes and their parents. Also, coordinates care between parents, medical assistants, physicians and/or physician office staff.

In a clinical setting, performs orthopedic evaluation of patients and communicates findings. Under direct supervision, documents and edits medical notes. Takes medical histories following established standards and guidelines. Follows providers' standing orders to order appropriate imaging.

In an outreach setting, provides daily medical coverage for trainings, practices, and events following sports medicine standards and best practices. Including but not limited to providing pre-game and pre-practice taping and preparation of athletes.

Communicates confidentially with athletes, parents, athletic director(s), coaches and physicians regarding athletes' playing status and ability to return to competition.

Maintains accurate records of injuries and treatments.

Maintains appropriate general treatment orders to be reviewed annually and approved by the team physician.

Provides patient and community education in the areas of sports injury prevention and care.

Provides athletic training services for all home athletic contests and away games as directed. This includes athletic contests held on the weekend and/or in the evenings. If a conflict arises between an away varsity football game and a home contest, the varsity football event takes priority.

Provides event coverage. Athletic Trainers in an outreach setting provide occasional medical coverage at outside games, practices, and tournaments.

Develops and maintains a budget for the athletic training program supply management.

Maintains clinic flow between all areas of the clinic, patient brace/crutch fitting and product education. Stocks clinical rooms with appropriate supplies.

Retrieves prescribed medications from Omnicell for provider-performed injections and prepares the patient and sterile field without participating in medication preparation or administration.

Minimum Qualifications

• Education
  • Bachelor's degree in Athletic Training or a related field.
  • Master's degree preferred.
• Licenses & Certifications
  • State of Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies (DORA) License for Athletic Trainer.
  • Certified as an Athletic Trainer by the Board of Certification (BOC) for Athletic Trainers. Basic Life Support (BLS) and/or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification.
• Preferences
  • Experience providing athletic training services in youth within the high school or community sports settings.
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills with athletes, parents, coaches, and healthcare providers.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a sports medicine team.
  • Experience with electronic medical record and injury documentation systems (e.g., Epic, Healthy Roster).
  • Experience with injury prevention programming, emergency action planning, and return-to-play decision making.
    

Salary Information
Pay is dependent on applicant's relevant experience.

Annual Salary Range (Based on 40 hours worked per week): $54,790.77 to $82,186.16
