What you'll do and what you'll bring:

Position Function: To direct, lead, assign, and perform custodial work required for the cleaning and maintenance of our residence halls and train the proper procedures and techniques for the equipment and cleaning products to our staff.

Duties & Responsibilities:

1. Assist in the assignment and direction of work; evaluate the work performance of assigned employees.

Requires the physical ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, balance, stand, walk, use repetitive motions of the hands and wrists, push, pull, lift, grasp, and exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 25 pounds of force frequently, and 10 pounds constantly as required when operating equipment and moving objects. Task requires visual ability to read written materials, judge distances, interpret size, shape, and shadow, and distinguish between color. Task requires the use of floor machines automatic scrubber, wet mop, dust mop, dustpan, bucket, wringer, measuring cups, putty knife, razor blade scraper, cloth or sponge, safety goggles, dust mask, and chemical products such as stripper, wax, detergent, neutral cleaner, sealer, etc. Task exposes incumbent to inside environmental conditions. Incumbent is frequently subject to electrical current, noise, chemical hazards, and such things as fumes, odors, dust, gases, etc. Task requires mental ability to receive, provide, and follow oral instructions and to read, comprehend, and follow written instructions and information regarding such things as chemical products, equipment,MSDS, and other safety information; use discretion, cope with diversity, which includes adjusting to work assignments and routines as needed, communicate effectively with others, be precise, and perform basic mathematical calculation.

2. Instruct employees in the proper methods and use of materials and equipment.

Requires the physical ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, use repetitive motions of the wrists, hands, and fingers, stand, walk, push, pull, lift, grasp, and exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, 50 pounds of force frequently, and 20 pounds of force constantly as required when operating equipment and moving objects. Task requires visual ability to read written materials, judge distances, interpret size, shape and shadow, and distinguish between colors. Task requires the use of carpet vacuum, shampooer, extractor, putty knife, spray bottle, sponge or cloth, measuring cup, safety goggles, and chemical remover. Task exposes employees to inside environmental conditions. Incumbent is frequently subject to electrical current, noise, chemical hazards, and such things as fumes, odors, dust, gases, etc. Task requires mental ability to receive, provide, and follow oral instructions and to read, comprehend, and follow written instructions and information regarding such things as chemical products, equipment,MSDS, and other safety information; use discretion, communicate effectively with others, be precise, and perform basic mathematical calculations.

3. Requisition cleaning supplies and materials.

Requires the physical ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, balance, stand, climb, use repetitive motions of the hands, wrists, and fingers, walk, push, pull, lift, grasp, and exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, 25 pounds of force frequently, and 10 pounds of force constantly as required when operating equipment and moving objects. Task requires visual ability to read written materials, judge distances, interpret size, shape, shadow, distinguish between colors, and have good field of vision. Task requires the use of floor machine with scrubbing pad or brush, portable vacuum, hand duster, bucket, mop bucket and wringer, wet mop, push broom or dust mop, counter brush, dust pan, step ladder, spray bottle, toilet swab, scrubbing pad, shower spray and foam gun, sponge, cloth, measuring cup, safety goggles, gloves, and chemical products such as acid type bowl cleaner, air freshener, all-purpose cleaner, ammonia, bleach, disinfectant spray, germicide cleaner, glass cleaner, hand soap, lime soap remover, mildew stain remover, scouring cleanser, stainless steel cleaner, and polish and neutral cleaner. Incumbent is exposed to inside environmental conditions. Incumbent is frequently subject to electrical current, noise, chemical hazards, body fluids, vibration, working on ladders, and such things as fumes, odors, dust, gases, etc. Task requires mental ability to receive, provide, and follow oral instructions and to read, comprehend, and follow written directions and information regarding such things as chemical products, equipment,MSDS, and other safety information; use discretion, communicate effectively with others, and be precise.

4. Maintain proper storage and security of supplies and materials.

Requires the physical ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, balance, stand, climb, use repetitive motions of the hands, wrists, and fingers; walk, push, pull, lift, grasp, and exert 100 pounds of force occasionally, 50 pounds of force frequently, and 20 pounds of force constantly. Task requires visual ability to read written materials, judge distances, interpret size, shape, and shadow, distinguish color, and have good field of vision. Task requires the use of floor machine with scrubbing pad or brush, non-treated dust mop, portable vacuum, hand duster, counter brush, dust pan, dust cloth, step ladder, spray bottle, bucket, sponge, cloth, scrubbing pad, measuring cup, safety goggles, dust mask, incandescent and fluorescent light bulbs, and chemical products such as all-purpose cleaner, germicide cleaner, glass cleaner, multiple surfaces cleaner, scouring cleaner, stainless steel cleaner and polish and wood cleaner and preservative. Task exposes incumbent to inside conditions. Incumbents are frequently subject to electrical current, noise, chemical hazards, working on ladders, and such things as fumes, odors, dust, gases, etc. Task requires mental ability to receive and follow oral instructions and to read, comprehend, follow written directions and information regarding such things as chemical products, equipment, procedures,MSDS, and other safety information; use discretion, communicate effectively with others, and be precise.

5. Assist with cleaning duties as assigned.

Requires the physical ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, balance, use repetitive motions of the hands, wrists, and fingers; walk, push, pull, lift, grasp, and exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, 50 pounds of force frequently, and 20 pounds of force constantly. Task requires visual ability to read written materials, judge distances, and have good depth perception and field of vision. Task requires the use of large trash carts, trash bags, refuse bins, trash cans, 2-wheel dollies, and gloves. Task exposes incumbent to inside and outside environmental conditions. Incumbent is frequently subject to chemical hazards, body fluids, and such things as fumes, odors, dust, gases, etc. Task requires the mental ability to receive, provide, and follow oral instructions and to read, comprehend, provide, and follow written instructions and information regarding such things as chemical products, and safety and disposal procedures; use discretion, and communicate effectively with others.

6. Report needed repairs to supervisor.

Requires the physical ability to stoop, kneel, reach, stand, walk, lift, push, pull, grasp, use repetitive motions of the hands, wrists, and fingers for extended periods of time, and exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and 50 pounds of force frequently and 20 pounds constantly. Task requires the visual ability to read written materials, inspect areas needing attention, judge distances, distinguish color, and have a good field of vision. Task requires use of brooms, dust pan, snow shovel, plastic bags, squeegee, window washing pole, rags, towels, ladders, etc. Task exposes incumbent to inside and outside environmental conditions, heights, etc. Incumbent is exposed to chemical hazards. Task requires mental ability to receive, comprehend, follow, and provide oral instructions and to read, comprehend, and follow written directions, instructions, and information. Task requires ability to communicate effectively with others.

7. Verify attendance of subordinates.

Requires the physical ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, balance, push, pull, lift, grasp, use repetitive motions of the hands, wrists, and fingers for extended periods of time, and exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally. Task requires the visual ability to read written materials, judge distances, and distinguish colors. Task requires the use of dollies, rags, Building Custodial Reports, and chemicals etc. Task requires mental ability to receive, comprehend, provide, and follow oral instructions and to read, comprehend, provide, and follow written instructions, and communicate effectively with others.

8. Assist in training others.

Task requires ability to exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally. Task requires the visual ability to read written material and judge distances. Task requires the ability to receive, read, provide, comprehend, and follow oral and written instructions.

9. Acquire and maintain knowledge of various job-related chemicals and environmental concerns.

Requires the physical ability to stoop, reach, stand, walk, finger, and exert up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and 10 pounds of force frequently. Task requires the visual ability to read written materials and judge distances. Task requires the use of keys, vehicles, pagers and /or radios. Task exposes incumbent to inside and outside environmental conditions, etc. Task requires mental ability to read, comprehend, provide, and follow written instructions, and receive, comprehend, follow, and provide oral instructions.

10. Set rooms according to custodial work sheet and customer specifications; arrange, move, and/or replace furniture, supplies, and miscellaneous equipment from room to room as requirements; report items requiring repair to supervisor and/or group leaders; perform minor repairs to furniture and building fixtures, if position requires it.

11. Mobilize fully loaded trash dumpster; push/pull dumpster to loading dock, push/pull dumpster to compactor, secure dumpster to compactor, mobilize empty dumpster, if position requires it.

Requires the physical ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, balance, push, pull, lift, finger, grasp, stand, walk, and exert up to 135 pounds of force occasionally, 125 pounds of force frequently, and 85 pounds of force constantly. Task requires the visual ability to read written materials, judge distances, shape, shadows, distinguish colors, etc. Task requires the mental ability to receive and follow oral instructions and to read, comprehend and follow written instructions and information. Task exposes employees to inside/outside environmental conditions, noise, chemicals, fumes, odors, dust, gases, vibrations, heat, oils, etc.

12. Operate motorized pallet jack, if position requires it.

Requires the physical ability to climb, balance, kneel, reach, crouch, stand, push, pull, finger, grasp, stoop, and exert in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, 50 pounds of force frequently, and 20 pounds of force constantly. Task required the visual ability to read small prints and perceive depth. Task exposes employees to inside/outside environmental conditions, noise, chemicals, fumes, dust, gases, vibrations, heat, oils, etc. Task requires the mental ability to receive, comprehend, and follow oral instructions, and to read, comprehend, and follow written instructions and information.

13. Perform other related duties as assigned

Requires all of the above physical and mental essential functions, use of machines, tools, equipment, visual requirements, and environmental conditions, etc. Task requires mental ability to read, comprehend, follow, and provide written instructions, and receive, comprehend, follow, and provide oral instructions.

Minimum Qualifications:

1. High School diploma or equivalent (GED)

2. Two (2) years custodial experience.
3. No allergies to soaps, cleaning agents, chemicals, or environmental factors in custodial service.
4. Must be able to climb/use ladders, scaffolding, and/or manlift of various heights to perform duties.
5. Must be able to read and comprehend all specified policies and procedures for safety, hazardous materials information, and University policies, procedures, and communications, and perform basic mathematical calculations.
6. Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and be insurable under the university's auto fleet policy.
7. Must be able to perform all mental and physical requirements as outlined in each job duty.
8. You must be 18 years or older.

Preferred Qualifications:

1. Additional experience in custodial work.
2. Ability to lead and assign work.
3. Supervisory experience.
