Transportation Project Manager - Highway Design - CM

Creighton Manning, a GAI Consultants Company
Location: Albany, NY (hybrid - 3 days in office)
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $55 - $70 per hour, based on experience
Travel: Approximately 25%
Relocation assistance available

About the Role

Creighton Manning is hiring an experienced Transportation Project Manager to lead highway design projects out of our Albany office. You will serve as the day-to-day client contact, manage schedules and budgets, lead QA/QC, and mentor project and staff engineers.

This is a full project management role, not a production role. You will run multiple projects at once across basic, intermediate, and complex levels, and help develop proposals in an active New York transportation market.

Schedule: Monday through Friday, standard business hours, with a flexible/hybrid arrangement. Occasional work outside normal business hours is required to meet client deadlines and attend evening public meetings.

What This Role Involves

As a transportation project manager, you will manage highway design and roadway improvement projects for state, county, and municipal clients across New York. Day-to-day work includes leading civil engineering design teams, reviewing roadway geometry and drainage plans, coordinating traffic signal design and traffic engineering tasks, and guiding projects through NYSDOT design approval and construction support phases. You will also oversee project budgets, prepare scopes and fee estimates, and maintain the client relationships that keep our transportation engineering practice growing.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the day-to-day client contact for assigned projects.
  • Act as concurrent project manager on basic, intermediate, and complex projects.
  • Manage project staffing, scheduling, budgets, and billing.
  • Review complete project documents for conformity and lead QA/QC.
  • Lead project meetings and public meetings on complex projects.
  • Coordinate multidiscipline project teams.
  • Train and provide technical guidance to project engineers and staff engineers.
  • Develop and evaluate plans and criteria for work performed by Engineer I-IV staff.
  • Assist in preparing intermediate and complex proposals and attend proposal interviews.
  • Represent the firm at client meetings, industry conferences, and business development activities.

Project types you will manage: highway design, traffic signal design, traffic impact studies, long-range transportation planning, and transit planning.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from an ABET/EAC accredited program or approved equivalent.
  • 10 years of experience in a similar engineering role.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license strongly preferred; additional engineering experience may be substituted for PE licensure.
  • Active membership in a professional practice organization.
  • Ability to travel approximately 25% and work occasional hours outside the standard schedule.
  • Authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship.

Preferred Qualifications

  • NYSDOT, NYSTA, municipal, or county agency project experience.
  • Traffic signal design or transportation planning experience.
  • Business development or proposal leadership experience.
  • Involvement in ACEC, NYSATE, ASCE, ITE, or APWA.

Who Tends to Succeed Here

This position is a strong match for licensed civil engineers who have moved from roadway design production into project delivery leadership. Candidates often come from consulting engineering firms or a state department of transportation and have titles such as senior project engineer, roadway design engineer, highway engineer, or transportation engineering manager. Familiarity with NYSDOT design standards, MicroStation or OpenRoads, AutoCAD Civil 3D, and construction inspection or construction management support is helpful, though we are most interested in your ability to manage scope, schedule, budget, and client expectations on multiple concurrent projects.

Benefits

  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • Company-paid life insurance and short- and long-term disability
  • 401(k) with company match
  • Flexible schedule and paid time off
  • Seven paid holidays plus one floating holiday
  • Paid parental and adoption leave
  • Relocation assistance
  • Tuition reimbursement and licensing/certification support
  • Employee Assistance Program
