The Commissioning Mechanical Technician coordinates, organizes, and executes on-site mechanical activities to ensure that all equipment is installed and commissioned in accordance with design intent, business needs, and reliability requirements.

The ideal Candidate will be based in Texas or Louisianna.

This role requires significant travel, 75%-85%, regionally and potential international travel.

The scope includes a wide range of mechanical equipment such as centrifugal, reciprocating, and screw compressors; steam and gas turbines; expanders; blowers; gearboxes; cooling towers; fin-fans; and all types of pumps, including cryogenic pumps.

Working closely with both internal and external resources, the role ensures that all work is executed safely, efficiently, and in alignment with operational standards. These facilities span multiple technologies, including Air Separation Units (ASU), Steam Methane Reformers (HYCO), Partial Oxidation (POX), Ammonia, Hydrogen Electrolysis, CO systems, and associated ancillary equipment required to support facility operations.

The Commissioning Mechanical Technician works under the direction of the Commissioning Machinery Engineer and in close collaboration with the Commissioning Team, Operations, and Machinery Engineering. This role is responsible for ensuring the safety, reliability, and efficiency of mechanical systems during the construction, pre-commissioning, commissioning, and startup phases of projects involving new and refurbished facilities.

Required Skills / Abilities:

  • Practical knowledge of the construction, commissioning, maintenance, and troubleshooting of large and complex rotating equipment.

  • Good leadership, interpersonal and teamwork skills with the ability to communicate clearly and effectively in a multi-team environment.

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and make sound decisions. Self-starter able to drive commissioning to completion.

  • Promotes a 'one team' environment.

  • Strong verbal and written communications skills.

  • Knowledge of vendors and shops is desirable.

  • Demonstrated safe work skills.

Key Job Responsibilities:

  • Provide & maintain a safe work environment. Demonstrate leadership with all Air Products & industry safe work processes to prevent all injuries.

  • Ensure the safety of all commissioning personnel by utilizing the Air Products Basic Safety Practice program, which includes Safety Work Permits, LOTO, Confined Space, etc.

  • Work with engineering, operations, and other technicians to organize, plan, and execute the commissioning of multiple pieces of rotating equipment to meet the needs of the project and customer.

  • Perform and/or supervise pre-commissioning, commissioning, inspection, repair, troubleshooting, modification, and installation of various types of rotating equipment. This equipment includes centrifugal, reciprocating and screw compressors; steam and gas turbines; expanders; blowers; gearboxes; cooling towers; fin-fans; and all types of pumps including cryogenic pumps.

  • Lead and execute pre-commissioning and commissioning activities such as lube oil flushing, alignment, inspections, preservation, and test runs.

  • Gather data and troubleshoot during machinery test runs, which includes using vibration analysis equipment.

  • Maintain accurate Inspection and Test Records to ensure quality delivery to the Operations team.

  • Work with the operations and engineering teams understand plant issues during commissioning and startup. Execute cost effective solutions for resolution to meet the customer's satisfaction with safety, reliability, product quality, and flexibility on product supply.

  • Facilitate attainment of operations excellence and customer satisfaction via commissioning productivity, reliability, quality, and cost reduction efforts.

  • Participate in incident investigations and Root Cause Analysis. Identify & implement sustainable corrective action(s).

Minimum Hiring Requirements:

  • Ability to travel regionally and internationally; 75% - 85% travel.

  • 7 years of hands-on work experience in commissioning, start-up, and maintenance of industrial rotating equipment is required.

  • Air Separation and HYCO facility experience is required.

  • 4-year millwright apprenticeship or equivalent experience is required.

  • A strong safety-first mindset.

  • A high school diploma or GED is required.

  • A valid driver's license and a good driving record are required.
