Job Description

Director Marketing, GCS Kidney

Vertex is seeking a talented leader to join our Global Commercial Strategy (GCS) team and work on our Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease (ADPKD) pipeline program. ADPKD is a genetic kidney disease characterized by the growth of kidney cysts that ultimately results in kidney failure and premature mortality.

The Director GCS will be responsible for developing commercial strategy, generating new market insights, developing and positioning our brand(s), and preparing for launch. This role will report to the GCS Vice President for Kidney Disease, who leads global commercial strategy for all Vertex Kidney programs. The successful candidate will have a track record of impact in commercial roles, a strong consulting-like skillset, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, innovative-focused environment.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Generate Market & Customer Insight

  • Lead development of deep HCP, patient, and payer insights across priority geographies through primary and secondary research, advisory boards, and congress engagement
  • Continuously assess the competitive and external landscape in partnership with Competitive Intelligence
  • Refine understanding of target physicians, treatment centers, and addressable patient populations, including diagnostic and referral pathways

Build Early Commercial & Brand Strategy

  • Define target product profiles (TPPs) and shape early brand positioning and differentiation for pipeline assets
  • Develop portfolio strategy, disease education, and diagnostic/awareness strategies, including integration of companion diagnostics (CDx)
  • Partner with HEOR and RWE teams to build a compelling value story for global stakeholders
  • Provide commercial input into clinical development, including pivotal study design, endpoint selection, and geographic prioritization to optimize future launch success
  • Conduct commercial assessments to inform program decisions and investment prioritization

Drive Launch Readiness & Execution Planning

  • Partner cross-functionally to define global commercialization strategy, including market entry approaches in geographies without an existing footprint
  • Support global access and pricing strategy, including engagement with EU payer scientific advice processes
  • Collaborate with CDx partners to ensure integrated diagnostic and therapeutic commercialization planning
  • Translate strategy into clear executional plans, partnering with regions and ensuring alignment with medical, legal, and regulatory requirements
  • Serve as a key commercial voice across clinical, regulatory, research, and commercial teams
  • Shape disease area and portfolio strategy, including lifecycle and future indications
  • Lead key planning processes including long-range planning, brand planning, and strategic budgeting
  • Drive alignment through clear communication, structured problem-solving, and compelling storytelling

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Experience in early asset strategy / pipeline commercialization / launch planning
  • Strong background in strategic planning and structured problem-solving (consulting or equivalent experience is highly valued)
  • Experience with diagnostic testing, companion diagnostics (CDx), or complex patient identification pathways strongly preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to translate scientific data into clear, differentiated brand narratives and strategies
  • Exceptional communication skills, including executive-level storytelling and use of strategic frameworks
  • Proven ability to lead cross-functional teams and influence without authority in a matrixed organization
  • Experience in rare disease, nephrology, or specialty markets preferred

Education and Experience:

  • 10+ years of experience in biopharma/healthcare
  • Bachelors degree required
  • Advanced degree preferred (MBA, PhD, PharmD, MD)
  • Scientific background strongly preferred, with demonstrated ability to engage deeply with clinical and scientific data

Pay Range:

$196,000 - $294,000

Disclosure Statement:

The range provided is based on what we believe is a reasonable estimate for the base salary pay range for this job at the time of posting. This role is eligible for an annual bonus and annual equity awards. Some roles may also be eligible for overtime pay, in accordance with federal and state requirements. Actual base salary pay will be based on a number of factors, including skills, competencies, experience, and other job-related factors permitted by law.
