As Mortgage Underwriting Manager, you will lead the underwriting team in delivering accurate, compliant, and timely loan decisions across all mortgage products. This role is responsible for overseeing underwriting operations, maintaining compliance with regulatory, GSE, and investor requirements, supporting audit and risk management initiatives, and partnering with cross-functional teams to drive loan quality and continuous improvement.

The Opportunity: We are seeking a Mortgage Underwriting Manager to join our team.
What You'll Do:
- Lead, coach, and develop the underwriting team to ensure consistent, high-quality credit decisions, strong compliance, and effective pipeline management.
- Maintain appropriate staffing to meet service-level expectations and support business needs.
- Oversee adherence to underwriting guidelines and regulatory requirements, including agency, investor, insurer, and credit union standards.
- Establish and maintain underwriting policies, procedures, and decisioning standards to support sound risk management and consistency.
- Serve as an escalation point for complex, high-risk, or exception loan scenarios, providing guidance to underwriters and production partners.
- Partner with Sales and Operations leadership to support responsible loan growth while maintaining prudent credit quality.
- Act as the primary underwriting liaison for compliance, audits, and quality control, ensuring timely responses and effective remediation of findings.
- Monitor underwriting performance metrics including turn times, approval rates, quality trends, and defect findings, using data to drive continuous improvement.
- Support investor, insurer, and regulatory audits by coordinating preparation, responding to findings, and implementing corrective action plans.
- Lead the rollout of new mortgage products and program enhancements, including guideline development, risk parameters, and investor approvals.
- Deliver and coordinate underwriting and guideline training for underwriting staff and production teams, ensuring alignment with regulatory and investor changes.
- Identify opportunities to improve underwriting workflows, leverage technology, and streamline processes to enhance efficiency and borrower experience.
What You'll Need:
- Bachelor's degree in finance, business, economics, or related field preferred or equivalent work experience.
- Minimum 6 years of mortgage underwriting experience, including at least 4 years in a leadership or supervisory role.
- Demonstrated experience managing underwriting compliance and supporting GSE, investor, or regulatory audits.
- Expert-level knowledge of conventional, FHA, VA, and government/state-supported mortgage programs.
- Strong understanding of mortgage regulations, compliance requirements, audit standards, and credit risk management.
- Proven ability to lead teams, manage regulatory accountability, and drive quality and performance improvements.
- Proficiency in loan origination systems (LOS), underwriting tools, and reporting platforms.
- Proficient in Microsoft 365.
- Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Able to initiate and embrace change.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, including written and verbal communication, and ability to work in a team environment.
