MISSION

The Project Engineer - Specials delivers custom solutions that extend Gilson's product capabilities. This role evaluates special requests, executes mechanical design, updated firmware/software, and coordinates with internal teams to deliver customer specific modifications. This role, as necessary and applicable, will support roadmap initiates driving innovation at Gilson INC.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Receive incoming requests for custom hardware and applications, work with sales, customers, and engineering to determine requirements of the request.
  • Design the system architecture based on the requirements of the request to determine areas for custom development and/or the use of existing product.
  • Assist in the feasibility assessment and the decision to approve or reject the request.
  • Work with management to allocate available resources within the group to approved Specials projects.
  • Track Specials projects and manage timelines to ensure timely delivery to customers.
  • Designs mechanical parts and assemblies primarily for (but not limited to) Gilson Specials.
  • Assists engineers, designers, and the product design teams in all aspects of mechanical design. Examples include component and enclosure design; packaging and manufacturability considerations; prototype fabrication and assembly.
  • Interact with existing vendors and develop new vendor relationships to purchase standard products or develop custom products.
  • Generate product documentation. Examples include mechanical drawings; assembly drawings; bills of material, and labels.
  • Design and layout of (front, back, other) machine labels as well as maintain label accuracy.
  • Maintain technical document records (control of documents).
  • Use of CAD/SolidWorks applications for design and part fabrication.
  • Participates in the implementation and maintenance of product change control.
  • Other duties as assigned.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent

WORK EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum of 2+ years of relevant work experience.

SKILLS OR KNOWLEDGE

  • Full product life cycle experience including bringing product to market
  • Experience in technologies required for lab automation
  • Experience in the design of high precision mechanical parts and assemblies
  • Experience using SolidWorks (preferred) or similar solid modeling software
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Proven success in a team setting

PHYSICAL ABILITY

  • Good or corrected vision
  • Ability to lift up to 30 pounds

OTHER

  • Eagerness to learn and the ability embrace change
  • Must be comfortable facilitating customer requests and interactions.

ADDITIONAL SKILLS/EXPERIENCE DESIRE

  • Experience in prototyping including the use of CNC, sheet metal, and fabrication equipment.
  • Experience in customer facing role defining customer needs and requirements.
