Job Summary

This position reports directly to the Superintendent of the HVAC Shop in Plant Operations & Maintenance. PO&M has the primary responsibility for the operation, maintenance, service, and repair of buildings, grounds, machinery, and utility systems at the UCDHS. This position functions as a "working" skilled craft journeyman Refrigeration Mechanic in a lead capacity for the HVAC Shop for a group of employees (Refrigeration and Ventilation Mechanics) on a project, corrective or preventative maintenance work orders.

The Lead Refrigeration Mechanic will assign staff with regards to status of projects and delegation of HVAC work activities. Incumbent must be able to schedule and control the daily working arrangements. This lead must perform skilled journey level Refrigeration Mechanical work in the installation, modification servicing troubles shooting and repair of equipment and prepare estimates and plan and manage own projects within allotted budget and perform related work as required.

As a lead for these employees the incumbent can perform the following duties: keeps management appraised of overall project performance (i.e., staffing or resource needs, completion dates, changes/delays in scheduling, etc.); distributes and reviews work performed on a daily basis; informal problem-solving; schedules or approves daily work schedule based on project needs; provides general input on employee's performance to higher-level manager/supervisor; and refers and provides information to a higher-level manager/supervisor regarding issues or concerns which may result in a disciplinary action on an employee assigned to their project.

As a lead for these employees the incumbent can perform the following duties: this includes, but not limted to: Analysis of control, electrical, plumbing, and refrigerant cycle malfunction to provide dependability and optimal performance of the campus refrigeration systems. Install, operate, maintain, and repair ventilation, air conditioning equipment and refrigeration units. This position is also responsible for skilled work in diagnostic testing, repair, and maintenance of HVAC, steam, and hot water distribution systems. Familiarity working in an environment where infection prevention is extremely important. Perform preventative maintenance annually, semi annually, monthly, weekly on critical and/or life safety equipment.

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

  • Required to hold a valid California driver's license, have a driving record that is in accordance with local policies/procedures, and/or enroll in the California Employer Pull Notice Program
  • No Minimum Education required
  • Minimum 5 years' experience in the Refrigeration trade and related practices, tools and equipment.
  • Must have experience with Preventative Maintenance and using CMMS Software.
  • Ability to perform all aspects of HVAC/Refrigeration at Journeyman level.
  • Must have good body mobility for stooping, pushing, carrying, reaching, and to twist and turn upper, including ability to lift 50lbs.
  • Must have physical stamina to work in inclement weather (hot/cold), confined space, from ladders, scaffolds, roofs, etc.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in a Health Care Facility
  • Experience supervising and leading trades staff
  • Experience with Metasys HVAC Controls
  • Experience with sheet fabrications
  • Experience coordinating emergency response with Refrigeration and Ventilation Mechanics.
  • Experience with Microsoft Suite which includes Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Technical knowledge multiple trades and skill levels to assign jobs according to employee's abilities and hospital standards
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local codes and regulations applicable to multiple trades.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and working specifications
  • Skill to develop, implement, and conduct technical training and safety programs.
  • Ability to learn and observe the safety policies and guidelines set up by the department.

Department Overview

The Plant Operations & Maintenance (PO&M) Department is a 24 hour, seven day a week operation responsible for the operation, repair and maintenance of buildings, systems, and grounds at the UC Davis Health System that includes 148 acres and structures that total 4 million GMSF. Plant Operations & Maintenance is one of the largest operations and maintenance support providers to clinical, administrative, research, SOM and SON departments throughout the Health System. UC Davis Health System is one of several UC campuses that have their own cogeneration, central power plants. Cogeneration (Combined Heat and Power or CHP) is the simultaneous production of electricity and heat, both of which are used throughout the Medical Center Campus and is supported by Plant Operations & Maintenance 24x7x365.

Work Environment
