The laboratory of Dr. Mary Weber in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine is seeking a full-timePost-Baccalaureate Research Intern. The position will assist with cutting-edge research aimed at understanding how Chlamydia trachomatis and Orientia tsutsugamushi secretion system effector proteins subvert host cell processes.

Annual Salary $38,755 to commensurate

This position is designed for individuals who:

Education Required:



  • Bachelor's degree in Microbiology,Molecular Biology, Cell Biology or Immunology, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.


Required Qualifications

A minimum of 3 months experience working in a microbiology or molecular biology laboratory is required. Prior experience working with pathogenic microorganisms is preferred but not required. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

* Basicproficiency with each of the following:

o General microbiologic techniques, such as culture, storage, and safe handling of pathogenic agents.

o Standard molecular techniques, including PCR, plasmid purification, bacterial transformation, agarose gel electrophoresis, and western blotting.

o Mammalian cell culture and sterile techniques.

o Gathering, recording, and analyzing experimental data.

o Data analysis and presentation software, such as Excel, Photoshop, and GraphPad Prism.

* Working proficiency with each of the following:

o Ability to effectively prioritize projects to consistently meet deadlines.

o Ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment.

o Attention to detail and accuracy.

Desirable Qualifications

Highly Desirable

* Working proficiency with each of the following:

o Passaging and maintaining various cell lines.

o Immunofluorescence microscopy.

-General microbiologic techniques

-Standard molecular techniques, including PCR, qPCR, plasmid purification, bacterial transformation, gelelectrophoresis, western blotting

-Sterile techniques
