The mission of the Instrumentation Department is to develop state-of-the-art instrumentation required for experimental research programs at Brookhaven Lab and to maintain the expertise and facilities in specialized high technology areas essential for this work. Development of facilities is motivated by present Brookhaven research programs and anticipated future directions of research. Our work has a significant impact on programs throughout the world that rely on state-of-the-art radiation detectors and readout electronics.

Position Description:

Assist scientists and engineers in the design and layout of very complex analog, mixed-signal, and radio frequency (RF) printed circuit boards. Provide innovative and creative technical solutions to working plans, detailed drawings, circuit simulations, and complete electrical schematics of printed circuit board designs. The successful candidate will work from preliminary schematics, notes, part lists, rough or detailed sketches, a basic description of the board function, and configuration and arrangement as defined by the engineers. The candidate will 1) establish design standards and configurations, and 2) work with industry-standard CAD/CAM and EDA software to verify completed design elements while checking dimensions, materials to be used and quantities. Assignments are usually on a project basis with long-term objectives and anticipated results. The candidate may be required to direct and coordinate the work efforts of other technical support personnel assigned to a specific project.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

* Assist scientists and engineers in the design and layout of complex printed circuit boards.

* Provide innovative and creative technical solutions to working plans, detailed drawings, and completed electrical drawings of printed circuit board components and assemblies for a wide variety of specialized products.

* Work from preliminary schematics, notes, part lists, rough or detailed sketches, a basic description of the board function, and configuration and arrangement as defined by the engineers.

* Establish design standards and configurations.

* Work with CAD/CAM and EDA software to verify completed design elements while checking dimensions, materials to be used and quantities.

* Ensure signal and power integrity for high-frequency and high-speed components, including single purpose amplifiers, RF modules, and high-throughput digital circuits.

* Coordinate the work efforts of other technical support staff assigned to a specific project.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

* A BS degree in an Electrical Engineering discipline.

* Experience using basic electrical test equipment (power supplies, spectrum analyzers, oscilloscopes, and multimeters).

* Experience designing multi-layer printed circuit boards (PCBs) for analog and high-speed/high density digital applications and working with CAM routines for inspecting PCB artwork for outside fabrication.

* Experience with common circuit simulation tools such as LTspice.

* Experience drawing schematics and creating new components.

* Experience using computer-aided PCB design software such as Altium.

* Experience with Keysight Advanced Design System (ADS) and electromagnetic simulations.

* Ability to collaborate with scientists and engineers on specialized assignments with the aptitude to exercise a high degree of initiative and judgment.

* Experience with Microsoft Office applications.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

* Three (3) years relevant work experience in the design & testing of PCBs.

* Experience with AutoCAD and 3D software.

* Familiarity with IPC Standards for PCB Design.

* Experience with Downstream Technologies CAM350 software.

* Experience with Controlled Impedance Calculators.
