Position description

The UC Davis Professional Master's Program in Medical Device Development (MDD) invites applications for instructional positions in a three-course "Engineering Skills" sequence offered across Fall, Winter, and Spring quarters. These graduate-level, hands-on courses are taught in person at the UC Davis Tech Foundry in Aggie Square (Sacramento, CA) and serve a cohort of approximately 10-15 students per quarter. We are seeking qualified instructors to teach one or more courses in the sequence.

The Engineering Skills series is designed to build progressively advanced, applied competencies in medical device design and development:

MDD 421: Engineering Skills I (Fall) introduces foundational skills in coding (Python), computer-aided design (CAD), and numerical simulation. Students develop engineering problem-solving capabilities through modeling, finite element analysis, and design for manufacturability, with an emphasis on real-world medical device applications .

MDD 422: Engineering Skills II (Winter) builds on these foundations and focuses on prototyping and manufacturing. Students gain hands-on experience with rapid prototyping technologies such as 3D printing, laser cutting, and CNC machining, while learning to translate CAD designs into physical devices. The course also introduces workflows for converting medical imaging data into anatomical models and emphasizes design for fabrication in a regulated biomedical context .

MDD 423: Engineering Skills III (Spring) advances into integrated systems and emerging technologies, including electronics, embedded systems, and machine learning for medical devices. Students work with single-board computers, sensors, and custom circuit design, culminating in a project to build a functional device (e.g., a calorie-estimation system using optical sensing and ML techniques) .

Each course is highly experiential, combining lectures with structured lab activities and project-based learning. Instruction emphasizes practical skill development, interdisciplinary integration, and teamwork in a professional environment. Courses may be scheduled as one or two in-person sessions per week.

* Appointment: 33% per course (approximately 12-15 hours/week)

* Compensation: $10,000-$12,000 per course, commensurate with experience

* Location: In-person at UC Davis Tech Foundry, Aggie Square (Sacramento, CA)

* Duration: One academic quarter (10 weeks) per course (Fall, Winter, or Spring)

Successful candidates will contribute to a dynamic, collaborative teaching environment and help prepare graduate students for careers in the medical device industry.

Required materials include a curriculum vitae, cover letter, statement of teaching, and contact information for 3-5 references.

The University will not offer sponsorship for this position. The successful candidate must be able to demonstrate that they are legally authorized to work in the United States.

Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

* Prior teaching or training experience in a hands-on or applied setting

* Industry experience in medical devices, biomedical engineering, or advanced manufacturing

* Familiarity with interdisciplinary, project-based instruction
