Coordinates and evaluates all elements of clinical, financial, material, and human resources (HR) in the provision of Intraoperative Monitoring (IOM) services. With Director collaboration has HR personnel accountability for personnel and budgetary oversight of IOM cost center. Coordinates intraoperative monitoring functions with remote contract IOM physicians and other WVVU Medicine system hospitals that contract Ruby IOM personnel. Performs Intraoperative Monitoring (IOM) Technologist services. Provides education, technical test review, and support to the neuro monitoring staff to assure neurophysiological studies of the highest quality. Responsible for the development and update of IOM policies/procedures. Designs and executes Quality service monitoring. Serves as daily contact for any construction/renovation projects that include IOM services.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:

1. Bachelor of Science in Neuro Anatomy or other related field.

2. Obtain certification in Basic Life Support within 30 days of hire date.

3. Certified Neurophysiologic Intraoperative Monitoring through the American Board of Registration of Electroencephalographic and Evoked Potential Technicians (ABRET).

EXPERIENCE:

1. Five (5) years of Intraoperative Monitoring (IOM) experience.

CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:The statements described here are intended to describe the general nature of work being performed by people assigned to this position. They are not intended to be constructed as an all-inclusive list of all responsibilities and duties. Other duties may be assigned.

1. Coordinates and evaluates all elements of clinical, financial, material, and human resources (HR) in the provision of Intraoperative Monitoring (IOM) services. Duty includes working with surgical department schedulers and OR schedulers to ensure availability of IOM Technologist coverage for OR cases. Requires effective communication with medical staff, hospital administration, OR leadership, OR healthcare providers, and other system hospital staff members.

2. Ensures adequate technical staffing coverage for all covered hospitals following established productivity standards.

3. Performs as an IOM Tech in clinical and on-call rotation as needed.Performs IOM procedures in accordance with policy and procedure guidelines in the Operating Room or Ambulatory Surgery Center.

4. Coordinates remote IOM physician coverage and equipment for all monitored cases.

5. Performs as the primary educator/mentor for IOM staff meeting the quality of standards of the American Clinical Neurophysiology Society (ACNS) and the American Society of Electroneurodiagnostic Technologists (ASET) to assure optimum delivery of neurophysiologic testing and patient care.

6. Assures the accurate recording of the electrical impulses of the neurological system by:

  • Exercising a technical review of the impulses being recorded
  • Demonstrating proper set-up for the designated test(s)
  • Detecting and eliminating artifact
  • Selecting electrode combinations based on the type of study performed
  • Describing normal and abnormal clinical manifestations and/or changes observed during the procedure
  • Utilizing a variety of activating procedures

7. Maintains an expertise in anatomy, physiology, and pathology relative to neurophysiologic studies in order to optimize the procedure and ensure patient care/safety.

8. Supports staff by promoting problem solving, peer review, team building, and by displaying the highest professional standards. Serves as the professional role model and competent observer for IOM Technologists.

9. Designs and executes Quality Assurance monitoring for IOM program including equipment and staff.

10. Maintains proficiency in use of neurodiagnostic equipment.

11. Develops and updates all IOM policies and procedures. Monitors compliance to administrative and departmental policies/ procedures.

12. Provides direct feedback to Director regarding IOM technologist performance and team needs. Assists with performance management and progressive discipline. Assists Director with the hiring, retention, interviewing, and recruitment of staff. Coaches and counsels IOM technologists as needed. May monitor employee action plans.

13. Provides direct feedback regarding provision of service and customer satisfaction. Assists with execution of hospital and departmental employee satisfaction action plans.

14. Represents IOM service functions as needed serving on committees as assigned. Participates in introductory meetings for new incoming surgeons utilizing IOM services.

15. Provides input into capital purchases and program expansion. Assists with budget planning. May lead program certification initiatives.

16. Performs monthly operational budget variance analysis/reporting. Responsible to monitor financial performance of cost center. Executes actions to keep budget accounts at or under budget.

17. Develops working relationships with vendors to promote execution of purchase/leasing decisions supporting IOM inventories under the direction of the OR leadership team.

18. Activates problem resolution and troubleshooting actions to prevent patient procedural delays.

19. Acts in the absence of the Director.

20. Performs service recovery as needed.

21. Ensures adequate inventory of IOM supplies are available for procedures.

22. Includes the implementation of operational processes that maximize work flow and efficiencies through the use of available technologies.

23. Stays abreast of new emerging IOM technology.

24. Provides input to Value Analysis Department on desirable supplies required for IOM clinical services. Includes the coordination of new equipment/product trials.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

1. Must have strong background knowledge of surgical and procedural environments.

2. Must have strong background knowledge of surgical asepsis and OR traffic flow to reduce risk of SSI's.

3. Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills. Must demonstrate English verbal and written proficiencies to utilize complex technical guidelines and manufacturers' equipment operational instructions.

4. Must have working knowledge of electronic medical documentation and computer software necessary to provide IOM services.

5. Must demonstrate ability to independently plan, organize, and set priorities in routine and /or emergency situations.

6. Proficiency with Microsoft Office functionalities and computerized learning systems.

7. Leadership skills needed to lead small work team and present concepts to diverse audiences demonstrating excellent analytical, communication, and problem solving skills.

8. Financial management skills required for budgetary oversight of assigned cost center.

9. Must be able to prioritize work tasks to demonstrate completion of those tied to urgent/emergent patient care needs.

10. Must be able to diffuse front line conflict and engage in crucial conversations to promote a healthy work environment and quality patient outcomes.
