Engineering Manager

Workiva, Inc.
$129,000.00 - $207,000.00
401(k), remote work
United States
Apr 29, 2026

As an Engineering Manager at Workiva, you'll lead an agile product development team with a focus on collaboration and continuous improvement. Your role will involve providing technical guidance, managing a diverse team, and strategically coordinating efforts to drive successful product development. You'll be key in fostering a supportive environment where team members feel safe to learn, experiment, and contribute innovative solutions.

In this role, you'll lead our Service Platform team within the Enterprise Services Pillar. You will be a top-tier steward-dependable, transparent, and predictable-as we build the most-trusted platform for our customers. The Service Platform team owns the "glue" between product services and the platform, including standard client stacks (Go/Java/Python SDKs), asynchronous messaging (Global Event System), and governed internal support tooling. You will also work closely with the API team that manages customer-facing API gateways and related components, helping to shape Workiva's API best practices and tools.

What You'll Do

  • Leadership: Lead and empower a squad of engineers. Foster an environment of psychological safety

  • Platform Enablement: Drive the evolution of our Service Platform, reducing cognitive load for hundreds of engineers by providing seamless, "it-just-works" SDKs and messaging systems

  • Strategic Outreach: Conduct cross-team outreach to proactively plan the team's roadmap and project manage cross-team dependencies. Manage discussions and planning documents inclusive of many stakeholders to decide on best practice patterns

  • Technical Stewardship: Interface with producing and consuming teams regarding asynchronous messaging to help align use cases.

  • Project Management: Lead large-scale migration efforts aimed at reducing technical debt

  • Talent Management: Effectively represent and communicate talent needs, prioritizing based on the roadmap and team capacity

  • Quality & Risk: Collaborate to execute a product quality strategy and mitigate technical risks within your group

  • Sustainability: Promote sustainable development practices, paying attention to support burdens, architectural direction, and technical debt

  • Representation: Represent Workiva Engineering at internal and external events and engage in recruiting via meet-ups and conferences

Team Performance Development

  • Performance Assessment: Assess and document individual employee performance

  • Coaching: Meet with direct reports to discuss and coach in various areas, addressing obstacles

  • Conflict Management: Manage team health, including employee engagement and conflict resolution

  • Career Growth: Prioritize and invest time into career growth for direct reports. Actively collaborate on career gap analyses with direct reports

  • Recruitment: Participate in the recruiting and selection process and manage new team member onboarding

What You'll Need

Required Qualifications

  • 4+ years of related software engineering experience

  • Undergraduate Degree or equivalent combination of education and experience in a related field

Preferred Qualifications

  • Domain Expertise: A deep understanding of Workiva's ecosystem, specifically how our Enterprise Services interact with the broader platform.

  • Architectural Influence: A track record of providing "look-around-the-corner" technical guidance during design docs or RFCs, showing a readiness to lead technical strategy.

  • Leadership Catalyst: Experience mentoring peers, onboarding new hires, or leading "squad-level" initiatives. You've already been the "go-to" person for team health or technical hurdles.

  • Operational Mindset: A strong desire to move from "writing the code" to "enabling the team," with an interest in improving Agile flow and reducing delivery friction.

  • Strategic Communication: The ability to explain complex technical trade-offs to cross-functional partners, showing the empathy and clarity needed for people management.

Travel Requirements & Working Conditions

  • This role typically requires no more than 10% travel.

  • A dependable internet connection is required to unlock remote work opportunities.
