SMPA is seeking a Student Services Specialist who will be responsible for recruitment and enrollment of students in the
SMPA graduate and undergraduate programs; advise M.A. students and support course scheduling in collaboration with faculty; manage students community-building activities, and manage awards to current and admitted graduate students. This position will act as a resource for
SMPA students, faculty and staff on enrollment and recruitment and class scheduling. This position reports to the Director of Special Projects and Administration. This position does not have direct reports but may schedule, train and supervise temporary staff or student workers.
- Coordinate student admissions and enrollment management for SMPA Media and Strategic Communication program, combined degree pathway, and undergraduate internal transfer process.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for prospective and admitted students, providing customer service, accurate communication, and conflict resolution both in-person and through phone appointments.
- Manage prospective student tours, information sessions, and connect prospective students with current students.
- Track application status, applicant outreach, and communicate important dates, deadlines, and award criteria via Slate and Screendoor.
- Process applications for review by the Faculty Graduate Admissions and Undergraduate Admissions Committees, and facilitate decision letters, advisor assignments, and major code updates with CCAS advising.
- Process graduate assistant and scholarship awards using the University Banner system. Submit stipends, hire paperwork, facilitating assignments and communicating expectations.
- Manage the recruitment, assignment, and hiring process for Graduate Assistants.
- Provide academic advising to graduate students, including academic planning, registration, graduation checks, and capstone logistics. Periodically update and create advising materials, and communicate with the graduate services team to address student services issues and clearances.
- Partner with staff in International Services Office (ISO), Student Financial Assistance, Student Accounts, Registrar, and CCAS Advising to resolve student issues at the first point of contact.
- Oversee the planning and logistics for Graduate events including orientation, graduation reception, and graduate social events.
- Manage the graduate newsletter, publishing monthly issues to communicate updates and important information to enrolled students.
- Plan and execute all SMPA admitted student programs, including Inside GW events, GW Preview Day, and undergraduate orientation. Coordinating with relevant offices including CCAS Advising, CCAS Admissions, and the Welcome Center.
- Manage the SMPA Student Ambassador program end-to-end, overseeing the full lifecycle from application and selection to training and development, while leading key events that support and advance student engagement goals.
- Lead initiatives and events to enhance student success and foster community engagement within SMPA.
- Collaborates with the communications team on student takeovers, testimonial videos, and other content to promote SMPA and its programs.
- Hire and supervise front desk Federal Work-Study roles, providing support and guidance for job success and task completion.
- Serve as a student services and advising resource for SMPA students, faculty, and staff on enrollment and recruitment, frequently collaborating with the Director of Graduate Studies and the Assistant Director of Undergraduate Studies.
- Assist the Director of Special Projects and Administration with logistics for SMPA signature events, including venue setup, catering, registration, and volunteer management.
Performs other work related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position. |
| Minimum Qualifications: |
Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor's degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 2 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Master's degree or higher in a relevant area of study. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. |

- Solid understanding of enterprise systems (Oracle, Banner, TargetX)
