DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This role focuses on maintaining safe and efficient operation of the boiler plant and related equipment while assisting with oversight of inmate workers. As a Corrections Utility Plant Operator, you will perform the following duties:

  • Boiler Operation: Operate three 600 horsepower steam boilers and monitor gauges, meters, and control systems
  • Equipment Maintenance: Perform routine and non-routine maintenance and make minor repairs to plant equipment
  • Auxiliary Systems: Operate pumps, fans, and other support systems needed for plant function
  • Water Testing: Conduct boiler water and softening system tests and maintain accurate logs and inventories
  • Inmate Oversight: Guide inmate workers, track movement, ensure safety, and conduct searches for contraband
  • Daily Communication: Complete paperwork and communicate with supervisors regarding plant operations

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment, 40 hours per week
  • Work hours are 2:00 PM to 10:00 PM, with rotating days off.
  • This position are eligible for full retirement benefits at age 50 or 55.
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
  • Salary: Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $47,925.00 (before taxes). However, a higher salary may be established in accordance with the applicable collective bargaining agreement.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Three years of experience in the operation, maintenance, and repair of a steam or hot water generating plant, or a steam and electric generating plant; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.

Additional Requirements:

  • Successful completion of basic training in Elizabethtown, PA is required.
  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.
