Job Summary

Under the direction of the IACUC Assistant Director: Responsible for reviewing and working with investigators to refine highly complex research and teaching protocols and amendments to ensure consistency with federal and state laws, regulations, and university policies, as they pertain to the use of live vertebrate animals in research and teaching; conduct post approval monitoring primarily through record review. Participate in the IACUC Office on-call program. Share IACUC Office responsibilities including responding to public record requests, facilitating and/or participating on IACUC subcommittees and departmental work groups; drafting/editing/formatting policies and guidelines. Provide IACUC Office general function support including but not limited to assisting with Animal Tracking System (ATS) oversight, management of protocol expirations, annual renewals and personnel training reminder notifications. Assist with special projects as assigned. This is a hybrid position with the majority of work completed remotely and virtually. The incumbent will work independently with minimal supervision while prioritizing and following through with assigned responsibilities. The incumbent is expected to actively participate in scheduled Zoom or other virtual meetings.

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

  • Degree in physics, biology, microbiology, public health, animal science, environmental studies or similar discipline, or equivalent combination of education, certification, registration and/or license.
  • Experience working in the field of laboratory animal science including experience with the principles of animal health, welfare, husbandry, and research techniques in a research setting.
  • Experience reviewing and/or writing animal care and use research and teaching protocols.
  • Knowledge of laws, regulations, guidelines, and policies dealing with the humane care and use of animals in research and teaching, including the Federal Animal Welfare Act, the US Public Health Service Policy on the Humane Use of Laboratory Animals, the NRC ILAR Guide, and the requirements of the California Fish & Wildlife Code as this code relates to the use of animals in research.
  • Skills to use computer applications such as word processing, spreadsheet, databases, and presentation programs.
  • Skills to communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing.
  • Skills and ability to work remotely both independently and in a team environment with minimal supervision while prioritizing and following through with assigned tasks.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certification by AALAS and/or PRIM&R.
  • Experience working in an IACUC office. Experience conducting and coordinating audits, investigations and evaluations and taking corrective action in a timely manner. Experience writing SOPs and policies.

  • 75% - REVIEW OF RESEARCH PROPOSALS AND POST APPROVAL MONITORING
  • 25% - IACUC OFFICE ON-CALL, IACUC SUPPORT AND OTHER DUTIES AS ASSIGNED

Department Overview

The UC Davis Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) Office is a service and compliance department within the Office of Research that supports the faculty based Administrative Advisory Committee overseeing the use of animals in research and teaching on the Davis campus and remote sites. The IACUC Office is the compliance arm of the UC Davis AAALAC, Int. accredited animal care and use program; one of the largest research and teaching programs in the United States. The IACUC operates under federal and state mandates and in accordance with UCOP policy. This position will be one of five Research Compliance Analyst 3 (RCA3) positions within the IACUC Office of 9 FTE (currently staffed at 8 FTE). This is a hybrid position. The majority of work can be completed remotely. The position may require travel to Davis for periodic in-person events, committee meetings, and/or training.
