The Division's responsibilities include planning, street design, technical analysis, signs, transit development, freight mobility and markings, ensuring the safety of motor vehicle occupants, pedestrians, and cyclists. The Office of Livable Streets (OLS) is tasked with prioritizing strategic planning, community engagement, research, policy, design, implementation, and long-term management. Their goal is to create streets that are livable, supporting safety, accessibility, inclusion, resiliency, active modes, community cohesion, and economic vitality citywide. Additionally, they aim to enhance New York City's pedestrian, bicycle, and micromobility networks, providing comfortable, connected, green, and reliable transportation options across the five boroughs. They place special emphasis on Priority Investment Areas, mode shift, and reimagining streets. The office also develops innovative new programs, design typologies, project delivery, and analysis tools to meet the demands of a rapidly changing population with evolving needs and technologies.

The Furniture and Operations Unit (F&O) within the Office of Livable Streets (OLS) is seeking to hire an Operations Inspector who will assist in the Universal Bus Stop Seating and Edge Object management initiatives. The Operations Inspector will serve a critical role in assuring the implementation and maintenance of DOT's goal to install a bench or leaning bar at every eligible bus stop in New York City in ten years. F&O manages the procurement, planning, installation, and maintenance of bike parking, benches, leaning bars, wayfinding signage, curb extensions, and safety devices for pedestrians, cyclists, and transit riders throughout New York City. The goal of these programs is to make the city more vibrant, walkable, bikeable, and mass transit accessible, particularly for people who live and work outside.

Under the direction of F&O Senior Operations Manager, the Operations Inspector will manage outreach to maintenance partners, business improvement districts and elected officials; use siting criteria to select locations for street furniture; measure installed street furniture sites; photograph locations of installed street furniture; using technical site plans to verify if furnishings were installed correctly; conduct inspections of bus stops and Street Improvement Projects (SIPs); create site surveys; create installation plans; inspect installed assets; create and correct accurate records in a Microsoft Access database and using mobile applications; create maintenance work orders

In this role, the candidate will also support community-facing work related to bus stop seating and signage installations, coordinating with business improvement districts, community groups, and elected officials to address local needs and concerns. The candidate will help ensure seating and wayfinding elements improve accessibility, comfort, and safety for transit riders, particularly seniors, people with mobility impairments, and caregivers. This role will contribute to the equitable implementation of street furniture across neighborhoods citywide. The ideal candidate will also be a detail-oriented, curious, and capable team player with a positive attitude and strong organizational and communication skills. The candidate should demonstrate a willingness to work in the field in all seasons or at DOT warehouse facilities, traveling by biking, walking, or using mass transit.
