Position Summary:

Under the supervision of the chief pediatric perfusionist and pediatric cardiac surgeons, the pediatric perfusionist should provide perfusion coverage for all pediatric cardiac surgical procedures, including heart transplant and mechanical circulatory support. Johns Hopkins Children's has its own in-house ECMO team but perfusionist involvement is expected as needed. It is the responsibility of the pediatric perfusionist to ensure safety, responsibility and accountability of every specifics of the operation of cardio-pulmonary bypass and extra-corporeal circulation equipment during cardiac surgical procedures.



  • Responsible for appropriate selection of equipment and techniques to be used, and to ensure the safe management of physiologic functions.
  • Follows established perfusion protocols relating to patient demographics, surgical procedure, and situation.
  • Monitors and operates an array of extracorporeal and blood testing equipment during surgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital.
  • Educates hospital staff and visitors about the practice of pediatric perfusion.
  • Performs as a clinical instructor for students rotating in the clinical arena. Participates in non-clinical (ancillary weekly routines) duties as agreed upon with the Chief Pediatric Perfusionist.
  • Has weekdays and weekend call responsibilities as determined by Chief Pediatric Perfusionist.
  • Active participation in the routine clinical and didactic activities, research and all relevant administrative and ancillary responsibilities.
  • Performs functions necessary for the support, treatment, measurement, or supplementation of circulatory support systems of patients during routine and/or long-term ventricular assist devices.
  • Opportunities for research are available if desired.



Education: Successful graduation from an accredited cardiovascular perfusion training program. Board eligible or board certified by American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion.

Maintains clinical competency as assigned by the chief perfusionist.

Licensure/Certification: Requires either current certification eligibility or current status of Certified Clinical Perfusionist (CCP) by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion. If board certification eligible, required to become certified within 24 months of graduation from an accredited perfusion education program. Should acquire the appropriate state perfusion licensure as dictated by the Maryland Board of Physicians.

Work Experience: One to three years of experience in pediatric perfusion and ventricular assist devices preferred.

Salary Range: Minimum 72.29/hour - Maximum 122.60/hour. Compensation will be commensurate with equity and experience for roles of similar scope and responsibility. In cases where the range is displayed as a $0 amount, salary discussions will occur during candidate screening calls, before any subsequent compensation discussion is held between the candidate and any hiring authority.
