Business Services at the University of Virginia (UVA) seeks applications for the UVA Transit HOOS Driving Training Program for the department of Parking & Transportation. The HOOS Driving Training Program, a partnership with UVA Pipelines & Pathways, provides structured coursework and paid on-the-job training as a full-time, benefited FlexRide or Ride Driver with UVA Transit at the University of Virginia's Department of Parking and Transportation. UVA FlexRide drivers provide curb-to-curb transportation services to members of the University community who are unable to use fixed-route transportation services due to a disability. UVA Ride Drivers provide overnight fare-free shuttle service for University students and staff. Upon completion of training, employees will have been onboarded at UVA, completed safety and security training and basic computer skills instruction, and have the necessary workplace and customer service skills to serve as a FlexRide or Ride driver for UVA Transit. After training, employees will begin defensive driving and practical on-the-road skill building with UVA Transit prior to beginning their regular FlexRide or UVA Ride (overnight) shifts. This is a joint training program for UVA FlexRide and UVA Ride. Candidates may indicate their preferred program at the time of interview. Training will start on Monday, July 13, 2026, and go through Friday, July 24, 2026. Training will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. UVA Ride DRIVER POSITION UVA Ride is a fare-free van shuttle service that provides rides for University of Virginia students and staff to areas in and around Grounds during overnight hours. Its primary function is to get students home quickly and safely after late-night study sessions, work shifts, or from just hanging out with friends. STANDARD SERVICE HOURS ARE 10:00PM TO 5:00AM, 7 nights per week during UVA academic sessions and 8:00PM TO 5:00AM during Recess service over the summer and winter breaks. RESPONSIBILITIES
UVA FlexRide DRIVER Position FlexRide drivers work within the Department of Parking and Transportation to provide curb-to-curb transportation services to members of the University community who are unable to use fixed-route transportation services due to a disability. They operate vans and other fleet vehicles on a rideshare service that operates in and around the UVA Grounds based on fixed-route proximity. Schedules for this position may include some early mornings and/or late nights as well as weekends, but the primary hours for shifts will center around the highest demand periods (Monday through Friday during University class times). This position requires a strong focus on accessibility, dignity, professionalism, and customer service skills and carries some physical demands associated with assisting patrons into and out of vehicles along with stowing and deploying various mobility devices. THIS POSITION CLOSES ON June 5th, 2026 PHYSICAL DEMANDS Safe operation of UTS vans and fleet vehicles requires sustained sitting, driving, pushing/pulling (steering wheel and various controls), repetitive motion, use of both hands, use of either hand, fine finger manipulation, and wrist movement. Safe operation also includes repetitive motion with right ankle/foot, possessing the strength and dexterity to fully depress the service brake and accelerator present on vehicles within the Parking and Transportation fleet. Boarding/alighting UTS vehicles requires the ability to climb stairs (at least one step up/down). Successful operation of ADA Accessible equipment aboard the vehicles requires bending, lifting, and carrying. Ability to lift and maneuver mobility devices (up to 50 lbs). All these physical requirements should be considered essential to the position. Work performed as part of servicing the equipment requires high amounts of standing, walking, and the potential for bending, lifting, and carrying. Anticipated Hiring Rate: $19 hourly commensurate with education and experience. The positions are also eligible to earn a departmental shift differential. OTHER REQUIREMENTS Selected candidates will be required to be able to drive any/all vans and support vehicles in the fleet. This position is considered essential and is subject to emergency and stand-by call. University Transit Service and Parking and Transportation have services that operate 24 hours per day/7 days a week.This requires that all employees have flexibility with scheduling. I would switch the order of the two positions because FlexRide was referred to first in the introduction and we are hiring the most for FlexRide.
