THE POSITION

Do you have the knowledge, experience, and discernment to effectively handle disputes regarding workers' compensation claims? The Workers' Compensation Office of Adjudication (WCOA) is on the lookout for a Workers' Compensation Judge (WCJ) to conduct administrative hearings adjudicating all issues litigated between employees, employers, and insurance carriers. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

In this role, you will be managing hundreds of cases in a prompt and efficient manner while protecting the due process rights of all parties. Work involves resolving conflicts in evidence or expert opinion by determining credibility after a review of extensive hearing testimony, evidence of record, written arguments of attorneys, and applicable case law, then drafting findings of fact, conclusions of law, and orders based thereon. You will be required to maintain familiarity with medical anatomy and terminology, medical diagnostic procedures, surgical procedures, as well as treatment and medication modalities, including the reading of hospital and physicians' records. You will also have the opportunity to employ your extensive alternative dispute resolution training to mediate cases in order to facilitate settlement of disputed issues under the Workers' Compensation Act. Additional responsibilities include:

  • Issuing prompt final decisions
  • Advising unrepresented litigants as to the nature of the proceedings and procedural rights
  • Reviewing settlement agreements
  • Administering oaths or affirmations and issuing subpoenas
  • Organizing and presenting educational programs and seminars on workers' compensation law and procedures

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 60-minute lunch. Work schedule may vary based on operational needs.
  • Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time, upon successful completion of the required training period. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Harrisburg. The ability to telework is subject to change at any time. Additional details may be provided during the interview.
  • Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Five years of Workers' Compensation practice before administrative agencies, or equivalent experience.

Special Requirements:

  • You must be an attorney in good standing before the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania.

Other Requirements:
