About the Job

The candidate is expected to conduct diagnostics of mycotoxins produced by fungi, especially Fusarium species, to support the U.S. Wheat and Barley Scab Initiative's mission - "To enhance food safety and supply by reducing the impact of Fusarium Head Blight (scab) on wheat and barley"; and to provide leadership for the Department of Plant Pathology's Mycotoxin Diagnostic Laboratory. The incumbent is responsible for developing and maintaining an active, extramurally funded program to support their salary, diagnostics services for mycotoxins in small grains and a relevant research program. The successful candidate should hold a Ph.D. degree in chemistry or a related field and have broad experience and knowledge in mass spectroscopy technology, analytical chemistry, and mycotoxin chemistry.

Job Duties:

  • Perform qualitative and quantitative analyses of mycotoxins in grain samples and other plant materials using GC-MS techniques. Analyze data and prepare technical reports. Develop experimental procedures for analysis of different types of grain samples. (60%)
  • Oversee the lab activity, provide guidance across the lab and troubleshoot complex method issues, and resolve data discrepancies. Supervision of technical staff and student researchers. (20%)
  • Verify proper operation of laboratory instrumentations and maintain laboratory instruments. (10%)
  • Secure funding to support the program of diagnostics services for mycotoxin in small grains. (10%)
Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • PhD in Analytical Chemistry or a related field with with substantial research and publication record.
  • Expertise in chromatographic techniques, particularly GC-MS for identifying and quantifying mycotoxins in grain samples.
  • Expert operation, calibration, troubleshooting of GC/MS, and routine instrument maintenance.
  • Oversee lab activities, provide technical guidance across the lab, and troubleshoot complex method issues and resolve data discrepancies.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with grant proposal writing.
  • Experience in developing, optimizing and validating analytical methods for detection of mycotoxins in small grains.
  • Publication records relevant to expertise.
Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $75,000 - $85,000 per year; depending on education/qualifications/experience

Time Appointment: 100% Appointment
