Primary Purpose of Position
The Extension Program Assistant/Associate has the responsibility of assisting with the planning, execution, and evaluation of effective and comprehensive 4-H educational programs that meet the needs of the county's youth from ages 5-18, in accordance with the mission and priorities established by the National 4-H Council and in alignment with the mission and vision of NC Cooperative Extension. The Program Assistant/Associate will assist in planning and conducting county 4-H programs in partnership with other 4-H programming staff and Extension personnel at the Chatham County Center. Such programming will include, but not be limited to, school enrichment, club programming, camps, special interest programs, and community outreach events. This staff member will train and recruit critical community volunteers and program leaders to continue program outreach throughout Guilford County. This staff member will also act in a Volunteer Coordinator role for the Guilford County Center.

This position is a full-time (1.0 FTE), 40-hour per week position. This position is 100% county-
funded.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Extension Program Assistant/Associate will:

  • Actively contact, recruit, and facilitate orientation for prospective volunteers to act as adult leaders for 4-H; they will also recruit and advise club leaders.


  • Assist and attend district and state events with youth members.
  • Recruit 4-H youth, community leaders, and businesses to participate in community events.
  • Collaborate with community departments and organizations to better meet the needs of citizens.
  • Prepare and modify various files, records, and reports, and maintain county reports and registrations within 4-HOnline.
  • Work closely with the Horticulture Extension Agent and associated Extension Master Gardener Volunteers to assist volunteers with EMG/4-H programming efforts.
Other Work/Responsibilities
This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 25 pounds of force.

The Extension Program Assistant/Associate receives direct supervision from the County Extension Director.

Travel within the county, district, and state is occasionally required.

Work Schedule Monday - Friday 8 - 5 business hours, with occasional flex hours to attend night and/or weekend events to support the Chatham County 4-H Programs.
Minimum Experience/Education
The minimum requirement for employment with the North Carolina Cooperative Extension ( NCCE) is a high-school diploma or equivalent. Advanced training in related fields is preferred.
Department Required Skills
Computer literacy, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Google Suite, is expected.

Candidates should have excellent time and resource management skills, be personable, and be able to build networking coalitions.

Candidates must have experience in working with youth and adult audiences.

Candidates must be willing to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, and be able to handle multiple tasks and establish priorities accordingly.

Candidates must recognize the importance of teamwork and fully support the comprehensive county Extension program.
Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education
We prefer that the applicant have a minimum of an Associate's Degree in education, child or youth development, family and consumer sciences, natural resources, STEM, and/or agricultural education. We also prefer the candidate to have prior experience working with children and adult volunteers in either a career or substantial volunteer capacity.
