Job Summary

Under general direction of Medical Director for University Health Services and under the supervision of one or more physicians, provides health care, including acute episodic illness and/or injury, chronic disease management, and health maintenance, for patients of the University Health Service (UHS). Evaluates and treats common acute injuries and illness using guidelines and physician consultation by phone when necessary. Triages and refers any patients to physicians that require further evaluation. Provides these services for UHS patients and campus visitors.

With general supervision functions independently within the scope of departmental and institutional policies and procedures; refers exceptions to Medical Director for University Health Services.

Essential Functions

Manages acute, episodic, or stable chronic Illness or injury. Takes patient medical history, performs a physical examination, and evaluates age related patient development.

Orders and/or performs appropriate laboratory and other diagnostic tests. Interprets results of tests, and makes appropriate clinical judgments. Assesses physical and psychosocial health/illness status of patients. Recognizes abnormalities and brings to attention of physician those not covered by standard guidelines.

Regulates medications and diet, provides psychosocial support and counseling. Prescribes medications following guidelines. Dispenses starter doses of medication to patients when Pharmacy is closed. Uses Universal Precautions when exposed to blood and body fluids.

Coordinates all phases of patient health care, makes arrangements for outside examinations and refers patients to other health care professionals. Provides health education and teaching.

Maintains working knowledge of emergency equipment.

Provides functional supervision to RNs, Clinic Assistants and other support staff in the area.

Keeps precise problem-oriented health records.

Participates in regularly scheduled department and organizational meetings, task forces, and committees. Participates in programs of quality improvement, peer review, and continuing education.

Understands and contributes to implementation of departmental and institutional goals for achieving non-discrimination and creating a multi-cultural environment.

Other Functions

Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Education Requirements for Nurse Practitioners:

Graduate of an accredited BS degree nursing education program or equivalent experience, plus completion of Masters level program for Nurse Practitioner.

Current license to practice professional nursing, and practitioner certificate from a national nursing organization and current registration in Massachusetts.

Education Requirements for Physician's Assistants:

Graduate of an accredited Physician's Assistant program.

Current license as a Physician's Assistant.

Experience Requirements for all APCs:

Two (2) years APC experience (1 year of which may be in clinical education experience)

Experience in prescriptive practice in an ambulatory care setting.

Experience in interpreting diagnostic tests including laboratory and x-ray results.

Currently certified in basic CPR.

Ability to exercise considerable independent judgment and ability to make assessments quickly and accurately.

Ability to lift and transfer patients.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in Occupational Health.

DOT Physical Certification.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in a laboratory or healthcare setting and may involve exposure to chemicals or infectious diseases. Requires standing for extended periods of time and/or use of protective gear.

Work Schedule and Work Arrangement

Variable Schedule: Provides these services primarily on weekdays but may have evening and weekend shifts.

In addition to regularly scheduled clinic hours, shares Walk-in Clinic coverage and on-call responsibilities as needed to cover day, evening, weekend, and holiday shifts.

Salary Information

Hourly Rate: $45-$55/hr
