Job Summary

This project requires the expertise in architecture and psychology, in human-centered design, human factors psychology and user experiences, as well as human-centered community resilience.

The researcher will identify existing relevant tools to measure stress as well as create ad hoc surveys and assessment tools to help the team conceptualize how stress is measured. She will also provide expert advice about how to interpret responses to the surveys and how such responses can inform the development of adaptive environmental controls.

This position is grant-funded; employment is contingent upon the continued availability of those funds.

Essential Functions

The NSF iHEAR project focuses on the intersection between the physical space and human responses to that space. The researcher who will assist in this project will:



  • Engaged in the design of an experimental setup that will allow us to study the effects of varied environmental conditions on the physiological, perceptual, and psychological responses of adult occupants.
  • Responsible for developing surveys that elicit perceptions of comfort and stress among occupants.

    • These surveys include a baseline, comfort, and stress questionnaire. The responses of occupants will be recorded and analyzed by the researcher.


  • Project meetings to review and discuss follow-up analyses.
  • Preparation time for meetings to review results and develop slide deck.
  • In-person meetings to design testing procedures Online workshop (preparation and participation).


Required Qualifications



  • Minimum of a PhD or Doctorate or the equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • Minimum of 5-10 years of experience.


Preferred Qualifications



  • PhD in Psychology and Architecture
  • Experience working with research teams
  • Experience grant writing and grant reporting.
  • Ability to connect stress and space characteristics
  • Ability to present results and findings to an academic audience
  • Survey instrument design and data analysis

Additional Information
This is a Part-Time Temporary position classified as Non-Exempt. The offered pay is based on the successful candidate's qualifications and experience, department budget, and an internal equity review.
