Job Summary
The Traveling Lead Data Center Technician serves as the onsite lead for assigned installation crews while actively participating in structured cabling and fiber infrastructure projects. This role combines advanced technical expertise in fiber installation, splicing, testing, and data center buildouts with team supervision and project coordination. The Lead Technician ensures all installations are completed according to quality and safety standards while supervising crew productivity and efficiency. This position requires extended travel to project sites and the ability to support both short- and long-term data center construction assignments. Job Responsibilities
Lead and supervise installation crews of 5-15 technicians on structured cabling and fiber infrastructure projects
Take direction from project leadership and translate scope requirements into daily work assignments
Act as a hands-on working lead while overseeing assigned portions of the project scope
Install cable infrastructure and perform fiber rough-in in data center environments
Terminate copper and fiber cabling, including single-mode and multi-mode fiber
Perform ribbon and fusion splicing using appropriate equipment
Conduct fiber testing using industry-standard tools, including Fluke and OTDR testing equipment
Rack and stack equipment and assist with server rack buildouts and rack elevations
Install fiber trays, ladder racks, cabinets, power trays, and cable management systems
Support Outside Plant (OSP) fiber installations into data center environments
Read and interpret blueprints, specifications, and project documentation
Monitor onsite materials and confirm daily material usage
Conduct daily stretch and flex meetings and reinforce safe work practices
Ensure accurate daily time reporting and completion of required documentation
Conduct daily jobsite walks to monitor safety, quality, and production
Identify and stop unsafe work practices and correct improper installations
Lead end-of-day team meetings to review production progress, project challenges, and next-day planning
Provide project updates, constraints, and change requirements to project leadership
Enforce OSHA standards, proper PPE usage, and all safety policies
Job Requirements
High school diploma or GED required
Minimum three years of experience in telecommunications or a related technical field
Minimum five years of fiber installation experience, including splicing and termination
Minimum six months of supervisory or team leadership experience
Proven ability to lead crews of 5-15 team members
Demonstrated ability to terminate fiber and troubleshoot infrastructure systems
Ability to interpret blueprints, specifications, and quality documentation
Knowledge of universal communications color codes
Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and Project
Experience with Microsoft Teams, Adobe, and Bluebeam preferred
Valid driver license and ability to meet driving requirements
Ability to work at heights, on ladders and lifts, and in confined spaces
Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and move up to 75 pounds
Ability to stand and walk for extended periods during shifts
Willingness to travel for extended project assignments and work flexible schedules
Ability to provide and use required hand tools and personal protective equipment (PPE)
Work Experience
Experience in colocation and new construction data center environments
Experience supporting structured cabling and fiber infrastructure deployments in active construction environments
Experience supporting large-scale rack deployments and fiber infrastructure buildouts
Experience working on projects lasting multiple months, including extended deployment schedules
