The Environment, Biology, Nuclear Science & Nonproliferation Directorate conducts fundamental research and develops technology to enable the transition to a secure, sustainable and resilient net-zero society.

The postdoctoral position will conduct research on state-of-art AI models with the specific goal to improve geospatial imagery analysis

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conduct independent research

  • Report on results of the research in form of presentations, publications

  • Develop and test AI models

  • Innovate on different AI architectures

  • Integrate AI models with other software tools

  • Develop, test and implement data pipelines

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Required PhD in geosciences, computer science, engineering or related field

  • Proven research record in geospatial AI as evidenced by publications

  • Expertise with development of AI models

  • Hands-on programming expertise

  • Explainable, ethical AI

  • Knowledge about vision transformers, self-supervised learning

  • Broad familiarity with geospatial programming libraries

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Non-LLM foundation model expertise

  • Time Series Foundation Models

  • Expertise with Graph transformers

  • Knowledge with multi-modal masked auto encoders

  • Expertise in developing larger-scale AI models (SLURM)

  • Position is location onsite in Upton, NY

  • BNL policy requires that after obtaining a PhD, eligible candidates for research associate appointments may not exceed a combined total of 5 years of relevant work experience as a post-doc and/or in an R&D position, excluding time associated with family planning, military service, illness or other life-changing events.

  • Candidates must have completed all degree requirements by the commencement of the employment.

  • Brookhaven National Laboratory is committed to providing fair, equitable and competitive compensation. The full salary range for this position is $74050 - $79500 / year. Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate's qualification, education and experience and considered with the internal peer group.
