Position Overview
The Pre-Med/Biology Tutor will deliver one-on-one tutoring support at KU Edwards Campus in Overland Park, KS, providing academic support in the sciences-particularly the pre-medical, biological, and pre-health sciences-to undergraduate KU students.

Tutoring will take place both in person and virtually via Zoom. In-person appointments will be offered to KU students in the Regents Center on the Edwards Campus in Overland Park. Zoom appointments will be also offered to students from the Edwards Campus and its programs.

Schedule: To meet student needs, tutoring hours will mostly take place in the evenings not including Fridays and the weekends, though virtual appointments on the weekends may be a possibility depending on tutor's availability and student need. Each semester, tutoring begins the second week of class. Hours may or may not be available during school breaks (Fall/Spring Break, Winter Break, Summer Break, etc.), depending on student need and tutor availability.

To prepare for their roles, Tutors are expected to attend Tutor Training prior to the start of their first tutoring shift.

Subjects most desired by students: microbiology, chemistry, biochemistry, organic chemistry, immunology, genetics, MCAT prep.

KU Edwards Campus: The University of Kansas Edwards Campus is located in Overland Park, KS, strategically placed to bring permanent growth and education to the greater Kansas City area by providing courses to working professionals, transfer students, and international students. While classes can be held at any time during the day, most classes are held in the evenings between 4pm and 9pm. The undergraduate programs that this position will serve may include but are not limited to Biotechnology, Applied Biological Sciences, Exercise Science, Health Sciences, and Public and Population Health. Many students in these programs go on to apply to medical school or health-related graduate research programs.

Job Description
70%: Provide academic support in the biological sciences to support undergraduate students across KU Edwards and Lawrence campus in course assignments, exam preparation, research development, and any topic related to biology and/or chemistry. Methods include face-to-face meetings with students at Edwards Campus and virtually via Zoom with KU students.
10%: Participate in ongoing professional development. Professional development may include attending staff meetings for Wingspan tutors, reading relevant research, and participating in other ongoing professional development opportunities.
5%: Participate in ongoing partnerships with a variety of classes/departments across campus, including the Applied Biological Sciences and Biotech faculty and staff.
5%: Deliver educational presentations, participate in or lead academic support events, present workshops, and other forms of academic support and advertising.
5%: Complete administrative tasks related to tutoring.
5%: Additional duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications
  1. Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, biotechnology, applied biological sciences, or any other related degree
  2. Earned a B- or higher in the course(s) selected to tutor at KU (or an equivalent/higher course) as evidenced by unofficial transcript.
  3. Not on academic probation, as evidenced by the unofficial transcript.
  4. Minimum of 2.5 cumulative GPA as evidenced by the unofficial transcript.

Preferred Qualifications
  1. Acceptance into medical school as evidenced in application materials, or an advanced degree in biology, chemistry, biotechnology, applied biological sciences, or any other related degree.
  2. Previous experience in education such as prior work as a tutor, graduate teaching assistant, undergraduate teaching assistant, teacher, or other related experience as shown in application materials.
  3. Previous experience tutoring as many of the following subjects as possible: Microbiology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Organic Chemistry, Immunology, Genetics, or MCAT Prep.
