Position Highlights

The position takes care of several aspects of moderately complex in vivo experiments and breeding for users of the Experimental Mouse Shared Resource(EMSR), which includes performing the hands on duties, being primarily responsible for communication with EMSR users (via email), to performing some administrative duties. Responsible for the operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of various equipment in the lab needed for performing of job duties. This position maintains the inventory and supplies for the EMSR refrigerator/freezer program which provides the lowest cost cell culture supplies needed for Cancer Center/University laboratories.

Duties & Responsibilities

Completes all aspects of more complex breeding of several different mouse lines (approx. 25 lines or more) for various investigators in multiple departments. This includes:

  • Ear tagging, tail tipping, and genotyping of all these lines.
  • Making decisions on which breeders to set up and creative ways to breed when the correct genotypes of mice are unavailable.
  • Assists in the creating of several new strain through breeding.

Completion of all aspects of various in vivo experimentation based on written experimental designs such as measurements, injections, etc.:

  • With supervisor guidance, refines, adapts, and makes decisions to switch experiment parameters such as switching time points, dosing, harvest times, etc. in response to situational demands of experiments.
  • Performs more complex necropsy harvests.
  • Responsible for numerous apparatus maintenance and utilization which is essential to completion of experiments.

Communicates effectively all aspects of experiments, breeding, etc. with supervisor and requesting laboratory via email, phone, and in person.

Maintains detailed records of experiments/breeding and analysis/interpretation of data for investigator. Catalogs specimens and samples as well as laboratory supplies.

Responsible for p-card transactions, ensuring all equipment is maintained correctly, and the billing file for all genotyping of all mouse colonies.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge in mouse breeding schemas and implementation.
  • Knowledge in In vivo techniques for injections, measuring, weighing.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with different groups/individuals.
  • Knowledge of cancer research and cell culture experience.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or high school diploma equivalency is required.
  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in a science related laboratory.
