Principal Fire Protection Engineer

• Provide leadership in determining solutions to complex problems and be recognized as having expertise in a functional area(s) of technical expertise.
• Provide direction and position responsibility both inside and outside department lines on programs
• seeking new approaches to problems and new application of existing engineering or scientific principles.
• Evaluate the results of programs and prepares reports and recommendations based on these evaluations.
• Identify and recommend improvements where established technology components and methodology are inadequate for solution.
• Keep informed of the advancement of technology as applied through one's area of technology. Prepare plans including schedules, budgets and personnel requirements for solving technical tasks identified by management.
• Develop schedules, monitor progress, monitor expenditures of budget and review quality of work performed.

• Communicate results and objectives verbally and in manuscripts form to customers colleagues and management.
• Occasionally prepare reports for external publication.

• Must be a US Citizen
• D. degree in applicable science or engineering discipline and 5+ years' experience.
• MS with 8+ years' experience.
• BS with 10+ years' experience or more in an engineering discipline and at least one of the following:
• Registered Professional Engineer in Fire Protection.
• Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE) NICET Level III/IV certification in the Fire Alarm, Detection and Signaling area of expertise
• Professional or Fellow Member in the SFPE
• Graduate of an ABET accredited Fire Protection Engineering program
• Provide design engineering staff augmentation support to SRNS.
• Primary responsibilities include engineering task analysis, walk-downs, design development and generation of design output documents including but not limited to:
• Location Plans, Connection Diagrams, Conduit / Block Diagrams, Logic Diagrams, Panel Detail Drawings, Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams, and Battery Loading
• Calculations in accordance with national consensus codes and standards. Provide technical support to site construction forces, start-up & testing, suppliers or subcontract personnel. Prepare Data Sheets, Statements of Work, Procurement Specifications, Design Build Specifications, and Purchase Requisitions.
• Engineering services shall be provided using SRNS processes and procedures.
• Programmatic guidance will be provided by SRNS.
• Candidate must demonstrate ten (10) years of recent design experience, four (4) of which shall be in the following area of expertise:
• Fire Alarm, Detection and Signaling Design - General knowledge of electrical/control systems, connection diagrams, layout plans, logic diagrams, panel layout details, P&ID's, and battery loading calculations
• Working knowledge of NFPA Codes and Standards, and National Consensus
• Codes and Standards such as NFPA 13, NFPA 70, NFPA 72, NFPA 90A, NFPA 101, IBC, and various other ISA and IEEE standards
• Experience with 2D MicroStation Computer Aided Drafting and Design (CADD)
• Ability to operate Windows Microsoft Office Applications
• The following qualifications are preferred for this position:
• Previous SRS Design Engineering or DOE facility experience
• Proficiency in using MicroStation 2D Computer Aided Drafting and Design (CADD) software.
• Previous SRS design experience and familiarity with the processes and procedures for providing engineering support to SRS facilities.
• Candidate must be able to perform weekly field walk downs of the job site for the engineering work being performed.
• These walk downs may involve construction sites with uneven surfaces and work in progress, walking for distances of over half a mile, climbing of ladders to access remote areas, dressing out in protective clothing and environments where a respirator is required.
