Position Overview


Position Summary
Winston-Salem State University invites applications for the Academic Advising and Student Success Coach Team Lead, a senior-level advising leadership role within University College and the Division of Student Success. The Division of Student Success has two openings for Academic Advising and Student Success Coach Team Leads:

These positions play a critical role in launching and sustaining the University's inaugural, longitudinal advising and student success model, designed to support students from entry through graduation.
The Team Lead positions will provide leadership, supervision, and strategic oversight for Tier II and Tier III of Professional Academic Advisors and Student Success Coaches. Grounded in NACADA Core Competencies and WSSU's Student Success framework, this role ensures proactive advising, early intervention, and data-informed practices that promote persistence, academic progress, and timely degree completion.

Key Responsibilities


Student Advising and Success Coaching

  • Maintain an assigned caseload of students from entry through graduation
  • Deliver individualized, strengths-based advising and success coaching
  • Guide students in academic planning, major exploration, and goal setting
  • Identify and support at-risk students using early alert and predictive analytics
  • Connect students to campus and community wraparound resources
  • Maintain accurate and confidential advising documentation

Leadership and Supervision

  • Conduct training and performance management for direct reports
  • Provide support to the Director of Academic Advising and Retention.
  • Ensure high-risk individuals receive immediate intervention and action plans are resolved.
  • Stay abreast of the activities of each advising tier.

Data Analysis and Program Enhancement

  • Collect, analyze, and disaggregate student success data to identify trends, gaps, and opportunities for enhanced support of all caseloads within their tier.
  • Use institutional dashboards and analytics tools to monitor GPA, credit momentum, and degree progress for targeted outreach.
  • Collaborate with faculty, deans, and student support teams to align advising practices with retention and completion goals.
  • Create reports, presentations, and strategic planning related to student success and academic outcomes.
  • Implement improvements and assessment metrics for advising programs and communication campaigns.

Professional Development and Institutional Collaboration

  • Engage in ongoing professional learning, institutional training, and other professional associations to remain current on advising theory and student success practices.
  • Serve on committees related to advising, retention, persistence, and work ready career transitions.
  • Model and promote a campus-wide culture of care, collaboration, and accountability for student success.

Team Lead - Tier II (Intervention Oversight and Outcome Accountability)
The Tier II Team Lead is responsible for facilitating interventions and ensuring measurable outcomes across assigned advising teams.

  • Oversees the consistent implementation of intervention strategies across multiple caseloads.
  • Reviews intervention data, persistence trends, and academic progress indicators to assess effectiveness.
  • Coaches advisors and success coaches on best practices for proactive advising, documentation, and intervention delivery.
  • Ensures fidelity to institutional advising models, NACADA standards, and WSSU Student Success protocols.
  • Identifies patterns and trends that require adjusted or enhanced interventions.
  • Reports intervention outcomes and recommends continuous improvement strategies to leadership.

Team Lead - Tier III (Strategic and Escalated Intervention Leadership)
The Tier III Team Lead provides strategic leadership for complex, high-risk, or systemic student success challenges.

  • Designs and oversees advanced, multi-layered intervention strategies for students with persistent or significant barriers.
  • Facilitates cross-functional collaboration with academic leadership, faculty, Enrollment Management, Student Affairs, and support units.
  • Uses aggregate data and predictive analytics to identify systemic gaps impacting retention and completion.
  • Recommends policy, process, or structural improvements aligned with WSSU Student Success goals.
  • Supports institutional retention initiatives and contributes to strategic planning, assessment, and reporting.
  • Ensures alignment between comparison table frameworks, advising operations, and institutional KPIs.

Department Required Skills
Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's degree in a related field, or equivalent training and experience and;
  • At least five years of experience in academic advising or student success coaching and;
  • Demonstrated leadership and/or supervisory experience.
  • Active NACADA membership or participation.
  • Experience advising student groups with specialized support needs, such as underrepresented, first-generation, or athlete students.
  • Experience with early alert, CRM, or retention management systems (e.g., EAB Navigate, Starfish, or Anthology).
  • Experience utilizing data analytics and retention management systems to guide interventions.

  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and confidentiality.
