The Cultural Programs and Exhibition Coordinator will assist in the development, implementation, and assessment of cultural programs and exhibitions for the Black Cultural Center at the University of Illinois Chicago. Cultural programming at the BCC offers our campus community and our Chicago community partners opportunities to explore Black American, African, and Diasporic histories, culture, and politics. The Cultural Programs Coordinator will help to guide the development of interdisciplinary programs, ongoing initiatives, and gallery-based exhibits that invite campus and community engagement with historical and contemporary experiences, cultural practices, and modes of creative expression from across the Black Diaspora.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Exhibition Coordinator
  • Work with the BCC Director and staff to develop themes and visions for exhibitions; execute the vision and turn the exhibitions into concrete and lively opportunities for student and community involvement.
  • Develop the Cultural Center's yearly exhibition calendar.
  • Activate our Gallery and Library/Lounge as spaces of cultural and political exploration.
  • Develop co-curricular materials and promote exhibition-based campus outreach programs.
  • Develop and coordinate an Exhibition Internship Program.
  • Establish relationships with community institutions (e.g. CPS schools, cultural institutions and community organizations) connecting them to the work of the Center through our exhibitions.

Student Supervision
  • Assist with the recruitment, training, supervision, and evaluation of student interns or student workers.
  • Assist with the planning and implementation of yearly student leadership retreats.
  • Work with the Associate Director to identify and advise students about campus resources appropriate to their individual or collective needs.
  • Provide professional skills development opportunities for interns and student workers and assist students in problem solving and developing conflict resolution skills.
  • Develop and coordinate an Exhibition Internship Program.

Campus and Community Outreach & Engagement
  • With Associate Director, serve as BCC primary point of contact for campus outreach efforts; attend campus resource fairs, off-campus presentations, and relevant special programs on and off-campus.
  • With Associate Director, develop and maintain a calendar of community outreach programs, activities, workshops, exhibitions, etc.
  • With Director and Associate Director, prepare an annual budget for community outreach activities.
  • Strengthen relationships with campus and community partners through programming opportunities.
  • Educate student interns on responsibilities of community partnership.

Administrative
  • Maintain and update BCC communications, including, but not limited to: BCC website, newsletter, campus communications, and social media platforms.
  • Create digital and traditional paper marketing materials for BCC programs, events, and exhibitions.
  • Maintain digital archives of programs, exhibitions, events. Assist in production of Annual Report.
  • Ensure accurate financial tracking for cultural programs, events, and exhibitions.
  • In the absence of the Director, the Cultural Program Coordinator/Assistant Director may assume responsibility and provide management BCC operations.

Assessment and Evaluation
  • Develop assessment tools that facilitate the ongoing evaluation of programs, exhibitions, and related activities.
  • Develop assessment tools to facilitate the evaluation of Exhibition Internship Program.
  • Assist with monthly collection of data to support assessment and planning.
  • With BCC Director and Associate Director, assess the marketing and promotion of the Center's programs and exhibitions.
  • Prepare accurate records and assessment of community outreach effectiveness.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications Required:
  1. Bachelor's degree.
  2. A minimum of (1) year (12 months) of work experience in education, arts education, social-justice-focused programming, Black or Diasporic Studies, Museum Exhibition, or a field related to Black diasporic cultural studies.

(Note: Master's Degree in an area consistent with the duties of the position may be substituted for one (1) year of work experience.)

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in education, arts education, the creative arts, Black or Diasporic Studies, Museum Exhibition, or field related to Black diasporic cultural studies.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of the histories, cultures, identities, politics of Black diasporic communities.
  • Demonstrated experience spearheading the development of Black cultural programs.
  • Demonstrated experience creating inclusive, interdisciplinary programming.
  • Demonstrated experience supervising students.
  • Demonstrated professional experience with community outreach.
