THE POSITION

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is seeking a talented Drill Operator to join our team for the upcoming summer season as part of the 2026 Summer Employment Program. This role involves operating specialized drill rig equipment and performing various manual labor tasks within a drill crew. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

In this position, you will be responsible for operating a variety of equipment, including trucks, drill rigs, water trucks, and electric drills. Your focus will be on ensuring safe operation while minimizing equipment wear through necessary field adjustments, minor repairs, and preventative maintenance. Additionally, you will demonstrate equipment operation to fellow employees and support mechanics with minor repairs. Your duties will also involve maintaining equipment records, performing manual labor during drilling activities, and securing access to drill sites. Proper selection and use of tools are essential, along with reporting any missing or damaged equipment. Furthermore, you will assist in guiding operators of rental equipment and contribute to technical tasks such as identifying soil and rock types, conducting tests, labeling samples, and installing and monitoring slope indicator casings.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Seasonal full-time employment.
  • Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch. Work hours will vary based on position.
  • Some travel may be required

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Two years of experience in the operation of core and auger boring equipment; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.

Special Requirements:
  • All positions require, at time of hire, an active Pennsylvania Class A Commercial Driver's License with the Air Brake Restriction (L) removed or equivalent.
  • All positions require, at time of hire, possession of an active Medical Examiner's Certificate in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Regulations.
  • All candidates must demonstrate, at time of interview, successful operation of equipment with a manual transmission.
  • All employees must obtain an active Tank Vehicle Endorsement (N) during the probationary period and continuously maintain it while employed in this job.

Additional Requirements:

  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.
