United States, Utah, Draper
Jan 27, 2026
What to Expect

The Head of Subrogation will lead the Subrogation team within Tesla Insurance, overseeing the strategic recovery of claim payments from third parties (e.g., at-fault drivers, manufacturers, or other insurers). This role requires a deep understanding of auto insurance subrogation processes, with a focus on leveraging technology and data analytics to maximize recovery rates while minimizing costs. You will drive team performance, implement best practices, and collaborate cross-functionally with Claims, Legal, and Finance teams to support Tesla's goal of efficient, scalable insurance operations.

What You'll Do
  • Strategic Leadership: Develop and execute the subrogation strategy, including setting recovery targets, optimizing workflows, and integrating advanced tools like AI-driven analytics and Tesla's vehicle telemetry data to identify recoverable claims
  • Team Management: Lead, mentor, and grow a team of subrogation specialists and processors (10-20 direct/indirect reports). Foster a high-performance culture focused on accuracy, efficiency, and innovation in a fast-paced environment
  • Process Optimization: Oversee end-to-end subrogation processes, from claim investigation and demand letter preparation to negotiation, arbitration, and litigation escalation. Implement automation and technology solutions to reduce cycle times and improve recovery yields
  • Financial Oversight: Monitor subrogation performance metrics (e.g., recovery rates, ROI, aging reports), prepare budgets, and report on key KPIs to senior leadership. Collaborate with Finance to ensure accurate reserve management and financial forecasting
  • Compliance and Risk Management: Ensure all subrogation activities comply with state/federal regulations, insurance statutes, and Tesla's ethical standards. Mitigate risks related to disputes or legal challenges
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with Claims teams to triage subrogation opportunities early, work with Legal on complex cases, and integrate with IT to enhance data utilization from Tesla vehicles. Negotiate and manage relationships with third-party vendors (e.g., recovery agencies, appraisers) to enhance external support while controlling costs
  • Continuous Improvement: Stay abreast of industry trends in subrogation (e.g., telematics, blockchain for claims), and drive initiatives to adopt innovative practices tailored to EV-specific claims (e.g., battery damage recovery)

What You'll Bring
  • Bachelor's Degree in Business, Finance, Law, or a related field preferred, or equivalent experience
  • Professional certifications such as CPCU (Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter) are highly desirable
  • 5+ years in insurance, with at least 3 years in subrogation or claim recovery leadership roles
  • Proven track record leading subrogation teams in a high-volume auto insurance environment (experience with EV or tech-driven insurance a plus). Demonstrated success in achieving recovery targets (e.g., 70%+ recovery rates) through strategic initiatives
  • Strong leadership and people management skills, with experience building and scaling teams
  • Expertise in subrogation laws, negotiation tactics, and dispute resolution (e.g., arbitration via services like Arbitration Forums)
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills; ability to influence stakeholders at all levels. Detail-oriented with a results-driven mindset; thrives in a dynamic, innovative culture
