Job Description

Schedule: Monday - Friday, Day shift

PURPOSE:

The Maintenance Technician supports PCC Carson City's manufacturing operations by maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing production and facility equipment to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient operation. Working under the direction of the Facilities Supervisor this role diagnoses and corrects mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and control system issues, performs preventive maintenance, and supports continuous improvement. Technician Levels Trainee-3 represent a progressive career path from foundational technical support to advanced diagnostics and technical leadership.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Equipment Maintenance & Troubleshooting

  • Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems on production and facility equipment.
  • Perform preventive and corrective maintenance to minimize downtime and extend equipment life.
  • Read and interpret equipment manuals, schematics, drawings, and maintenance procedures.
  • Troubleshoot motors, drives, pumps, valves, conveyors, furnaces, and auxiliary systems.

Electrical & Controls Support

  • Troubleshoot electrical components including motors, sensors, switches, relays, and basic control circuits.
  • Support PLC-controlled equipment and temperature control systems (scope varies by level).

Welding & Fabrication

  • Perform welding and fabrication repairs on equipment, guards, fixtures, and structural components.

Safety & Compliance

  • Follow lockout/tagout, confined space, and all plant safety procedures.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe maintenance work area.
  • Identify and report unsafe conditions or equipment risks.

Documentation & Communication

  • Complete maintenance work orders, PM records, and equipment history logs.
  • Communicate equipment status, root cause, and corrective actions to supervision and operations.

General

  • Perform other duties as assigned to support department and company objectives.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:

  • This position reports directly to the Facilities Supervisor

PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Maintenance Technician - Trainee (Entry)

  • High school diploma or GED; enrollment in or completion of a technical program in Industrial Maintenance, Electrical, Mechanical, or related field preferred.
  • Learn and follow safety procedures including lockout/tagout.
  • Develop basic skills in hand tools, power tools, pneumatics, hydraulics, and electrical systems under direct supervision.
  • Limited prior maintenance experience required; position designed for individuals developing foundational industrial skills.
    • Assist Maintenance Technicians with routine tasks, including:
    • 6S / workplace organization projects
    • Painting, flooring, and facility upkeep
    • Equipment cleaning, lubrication, and staging
    • Tool handling and material movement
    • Assisting with preventive maintenance activities

Maintenance Technician Level 1 (Entry / Developing)

In addition to the skills and responsibilities of a Trainee:

  • 1-3 years of industrial or mechanical maintenance experience or equivalent technical training.
  • Basic knowledge of mechanical systems, pneumatics, and hydraulics.
  • Introductory electrical troubleshooting skills (sensors, motors, basic circuits).
  • Ability to read manuals and follow maintenance procedures.
  • Welding experience preferred.
  • Works under close supervision; developing troubleshooting skills.

Maintenance Technician Level 2 (Skilled / Independent)

In addition to the skills and responsibilities of a Level 1 Technician:

  • 3-5 years of industrial maintenance experience.
  • Strong mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic troubleshooting capability.
  • Working knowledge of electrical systems and controls.
  • Ability to diagnose equipment failures and perform independent repairs.
  • Experience with preventive maintenance programs.
  • PLC and temperature control exposure preferred.
  • May mentor Level 1 technicians.

Maintenance Technician Level 3 (Senior / Lead-Level Technical Authority)

In addition to the skills and responsibilities of a Level 2 Technician:

  • 5+ years of advanced industrial maintenance experience.
  • Expert-level troubleshooting across mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems.
  • Strong electrical and controls knowledge; PLC troubleshooting and programming preferred.
  • Experience with furnace systems, temperature controls, and complex automated equipment.
  • Ability to lead complex repairs, root cause investigations, and reliability improvements.
  • Provides technical guidance and training to lower-level technicians.
  • Supports capital projects, equipment upgrades, and continuous improvement initiatives.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to stand, walk, climb, kneel, bend, and work in awkward positions for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift and maneuver up to 35 pounds independently; heavier items require lifting devices or assistance.
  • Ability to work around moving machinery, electrical systems, heat, noise, and industrial environments.
  • Ability to use hand tools, power tools, and diagnostic equipment for extended durations.
