Job Summary
The role provides 24/7 operational, administrative, and fiscal leadership across the Mental Health Workers (MHWs), Special Duty Caregivers (TeleSitters), Behavioral Escalation Support Team (BEST), Lift Team, Patient Transport, and Mobility Team.
This position operates with a high degree of autonomy and accountability, exercising broad decision-making authority with minimal supervision to ensure all assigned programs remain compliant with Joint Commission, federal, state, and infection prevention standards, and are aligned with the strategic objectives of Patient Care Services and UC Davis Health.
The role leads program development, quality improvement, and safety initiatives. It advances a therapeutic, trauma-informed, and patient-centered care model that supports UC Davis Health's mission, values, and long-term strategic plan. - Obtain an American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross Basic Life Support (BLS), or UC Davis Health CPR within 3 months of employment and maintains current.
- Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training
- At least three (3) years of recent management experience.
- Demonstrated leadership in managing multidisciplinary teams within high-acuity behavioral health, medical-surgical, and operational healthcare environments, including personnel management, administrative coordination, and fiscal oversight.
- Strong knowledge of behavioral health principles and safe patient handling practices, including crisis intervention, de-escalation, trauma-informed care, body mechanics, ergonomics, and injury prevention strategies.
- Ability to interpret and apply regulatory and compliance standards, including Joint Commission, CMS, state regulations, patient rights, workplace violence prevention requirements (e.g., CPI), and organizational safety policies.
- Skills and abilities to oversee complex, centralized operations, including patient transport services and familiarity with Epic Transport/Grand Central or similar operational and dispatch systems.
- Excellent communication, collaboration, and conflict resolution skills, with the ability to partner effectively with nursing, psychiatry, security, ancillary services, and administrative leadership.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities to interpret operational and financial reports, develop staffing and budget forecasts, utilize data for program evaluation, and drive performance improvement initiatives.
- Ability to organize, prioritize, and coordinate services across multiple units and shifts in a fast-paced, 24/7, high-volume healthcare environment while meeting deadlines and maintaining service quality.
- Knowledge of human resources policies, labor relations, and performance management, including experience working within collective bargaining environments and applying employee relations and appraisal methods.
- Demonstrated innovation and change management skills, with the ability to lead teams through evolving workflows, technology implementations, and organizational priorities.

Department Overview Patient Support Services provides comprehensive, centralized support across multiple clinical and operational programs to ensure the safe, timely, and patient-centered delivery of care throughout UC Davis Health. This department is responsible for the direct supervision and operational oversight of the Lift Team (Lift Technicians), Mental Health Workers (MHWs), Patient Transporters, Special Duty Caregivers/TeleSitters, and Volunteers, who collectively support inpatient units, outpatient clinics, diagnostic areas, and hospital-wide operations. Department Specific Job Scope Patient Transport provides centralized transport services for inpatients, outpatients, and visitors throughout the main hospital, including service to the emergency room and radiology.
The Lift Team is a specialized group that supports various programs and initiatives throughout the hospital.
