Overview

The psychometrist provides direct patient care under the supervision of a clinical neuropsychologist. The psychometrist will administer and score tests to evaluate patients' neuropsychological, cognitive, academic, behavioral, and emotional status. The psychometrist demonstrates the ability to quickly and accurately score complex test protocols and make astute, pertinent behavioral observations. Attention to detail is a critical strength. This role serves patients who have problems affecting their brain and behavior as a result of neurodegenerative conditions, cerebrovascular disease, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, stroke, brain tumor, traumatic brain injury, substance use disorders and other neurological, developmental and psychiatric syndromes. The psychometrist will work closely with patients for extended periods of time to administer standardized, interactive tests. Throughout, the psychometrist should relate to patients and patient-related situations in a calm, sensitive, and empathic manner in order to establish and maintain patient cooperation and optimal performance. The psychometrist's work will inform diagnosis and provider recommendations regarding a patient's ability to return to school or work after injury or illness, capacity for independence in activities of daily living, need for accommodations in daily life and other treatment decisions. Other responsibilities include maintaining a good supply of testing materials and supporting the neuropsychologists with a number of other administrative tasks. The psychometrist may provide technical support on specialty teams and for clinical research projects. In addition, this associate is expected to adhere to and exemplify the St. Luke's Standards of Excellence and the PMR associate-patient relationship policy.

Responsibilities
  • Accurately administers and records responses, times and scores tests/observations concerning the patient's performance during the testing session using standardized methods and protocols.
  • Assists Neuropsychologists in selection of test to be administered. Trouble-shoot difficult testing situations and administer appropriate testing based on patient needs and diagnosis.
  • Adapt the administration of test to the specific needs of each patient while staying within the standardized procedures set forth for each specific test.
  • Works to ensure that the patient is always giving best performance on a given test.
  • Clearly communicates test scores and associated testing information and furnishes test results and other clinical observations to Neuropsychologists in a timely and professional manner.
  • Remains sensitive, alert, and resourceful during testing to tailor the approach to the patient's special needs (especially when dealing with extremely impaired and/or disturbed patients).
  • Provide a written summary of the patient's behavior during testing, including any interactions with the patient's guest/family member that may be observed incidentally.
  • Maintains record keeping and data retrieval systems associated with test batteries.
  • Screens neuropsychology patients for behavioral and cognitive impairments using standardized testing batteries.
  • Communicates with members of the neuropsychology team to coordinate an individual's case, including scores and other criteria necessary for neuropsychologist to make accurate results interpretation.
  • Completes examinations and other test batteries unique clinical populations.
  • Consistently shows demonstrated work in data collection, research, publication, or other job-related non-testing tasks as directed by Neuropsychologist.
  • Review and ensure timeliness, accuracy, and availability and security of information.
  • Assist with research projects and special groups.
  • Participate in improving organizational performance through recommending areas or approaches for improvement activities, performing new procedures, collecting data, and providing input to departmental discussions.
  • Comply with Infection Control and Health and Safety policies and procedures.
  • Implements measures to promote a safe environment for the patient/family.
  • Successfully completes the orientation and annual hospital and unit specific competencies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
  • Bachelors Degree in psychology or related field required
  • Must read, write, and speak fluent English.
  • Valid driver's license when driving any vehicle for work-related reasons.
  • Attention to details is a critical strength. Must be a positive representative of UnityPoint Health in all interactions.
  • Ability to develop and facilitate interagency communication to implement program goals and objectives.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Positive public image including public speaking and working with community partners.
  • Strong interpersonal communication and people skills.
