Job Summary

This position begins in August, 2026

Mesa Community College seeks a dynamic and passionate faculty member to teach general microbiology with the flexibility and expertise to also teach anatomy & physiology. We are looking for an innovative and creative science educator dedicated to empowering a diverse and often underprepared community college student population through engaging and inclusive teaching practices for in-person and online instruction. Students enrolling in microbiology are predominantly majors in a health related field (such as nursing, dental hygiene, etc.) or veterinary technology.

In addition to teaching, developing and refining teaching materials, incorporating recent advances in the discipline into the curriculum, and providing service to the department and college community are also required. Candidates must be adaptable, capable of working both independently and collaboratively, and ready to contribute to a range of interdisciplinary and institutional committees and initiatives.

Essential Functions

* Instructs a diverse population of students in classroom, lab and online settings; uses learner-centered strategies to engage students and promote student success; demonstrates innovation in teaching and learning and the scholarship of learning by focusing on student learning, retention, and achievement; incorporates instructional technology, ADA compliant course design, and current teaching methodologies appropriate to the modality.

* Develops and refines instructional materials and curriculum; develops written syllabi and course materials; assesses and evaluates knowledge of subject matter taught and monitors students' scholastic records using MCC's Learning Management System (LMS); prepares and grades examinations and other learning activities; participates in department and college assessment and program review processes; uses assessment and evaluation results to improve instruction and student learning

* Maintains academic support hours to assist, tutor, and advise students to promote learning, citizenship and personal development; provides leadership for the Life Science Department; works with students outside of the classroom on instructional activities and projects; participates in outreach activities to promote student recruitment

* Participates in college and district activities including department/division meetings, committees, professional growth, workshops, and projects; contributes to the academic life and mission of the college; demonstrates intercultural competence in interactions with students, staff, and the community; maintains a team approach in collaborating with faculty, staff, and students.

* Develops and enhances knowledge of subject matter taught and individual training skills required to remain current with new trends and developments in the field and to promote the scholarship of teaching and learning through attendance at conferences, courses, seminars, and/or workshops.

Minimum Qualifications

A Master's degree or higher with 18 graduate semester hours in the teaching field or a Master's degree or higher in the teaching field is required.

Desired Qualifications

A. MS or PhD degree within the biological sciences. Biologist with experience in microbiology, cell and molecular biology, immunology, and some anatomy and physiology.

B. College teaching experience in face-to-face lecture and lab setting teaching in the following courses: microbiology, genetics, cell biology, and introduction to human anatomy and physiology.

C. Experience designing and conducting course based research within the biological sciences involving undergraduate college students.

D. Developed face-to-face and online curriculum, lecture, and lab instructional materials using best practices in college education aimed at a diverse and underprepared student population, including real and substantive interaction in online courses and accessible course materials

E. Demonstrated innovation and creativity related to science education

F. Demonstrated commitment to professional growth and service to the department and college.

G. Experience mentoring students outside of classroom instruction

Special Working Conditions

May be required to teach at multiple sites and may be assigned to day, evening, weekend or online classes as needed.
Exposure to biology laboratory chemicals, biological cultures, specimens (including preserved specimens)
May be required to lift up to 25 lbs. with or without a reasonable accommodation
May require prolonged periods of viewing a computer screen
