Job Summary
#CA-FT This supervisory position supports the departmental goals by processing patient samples and preparing slides for Histologic analysis. The incumbent will be competent in the full range of tissue preparation assignments, including the most specialized techniques, such as immunohistochemical stains. They also serve as a lead for technical expertise and in troubleshooting and development of new techniques. The focus of this position will be oversight of the Histology laboratory, and duties include but are not limited to full range of tissue preparation assignments, routine histology, special stains, and the most specialized techniques, such as immunohistochemical stains. Supervisors adhere to all departmental and governing organizations' policies and guidelines and ensures effective and efficient operations of the section's pre-analytical and analytical performance. - Histotechnologist (HTL) or Histotechnician (HT) certification through the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP). Certification must be up to date and renewed as appropriate.
- Required to hold a valid California driver's license, have a driving record that is in accordance with local policies/procedures, and/or enroll in the California Employer Pull Notice Program
- Bachelor's of Science related science field (Biology, Chemistry, Cell and Molecular, etc.).
- Must have worked in a hospital/clinical based Anatomical Pathology Histology Lab Setting in the past five years.
- Experience in sectioning paraffin embedded and fresh tissues as thin as one (1) micron on a rotary and/or electric microtome.
- Previous supervisory experience of at least 2 years in a hospital clinical laboratory setting.
- Knowledge and experience in embedding fresh and fixed various tissues for microtomy sections.
- Knowledge of routine H&E and special histochemical stains.
- Knowledge and experience cutting high-quality paraffin embedded and fresh tissue blocks at 1-10 microns in a timely fashion.
- Knowledge of an ability to learn special histological stains including the ability to perform several stains simultaneously.
- Knowledge of the Laboratory and Hospital Information Systems (LIS/HIS) and other basic computer programs.
- Identifies self and section when answering/using the phone; deliver messages and/or refers phone calls to the appropriate person.
- Forwards all the information, as required.
- Handles telephone information/requests with courtesy, accuracy, and respect for patient confidentiality.
- Work at establishing professional working relationships with all departmental personnel.
- Readily assists staff.
- Maintain appropriate interdepartmental communications.
- Demonstrate good verbal and written communication skills; document and report clearly and concisely; convey instructions, directions and information appropriately.
- Ability to prioritize work based upon departmental turnaround requirements and priority requests.
- Technical and mechanical skills to operate and perform preventive maintenance on equipment in the area.
- Ability to work well, accurately, and neatly under tight time restrictions.
- Tact and diplomacy skills to meet departmental needs.

- Ability to perform complex laboratory procedures following established protocols.
- Must maintain patient confidentiality before, during and after specimen test preparation and performance.
Preferred Qualifications
- Additional certifications held through the American Society for Clinical Pathology as relates to the Histology Laboratory.
- Previous supervisory experience of five years in a hospital clinical laboratory setting.
- Knowledge of hospital and Laboratory Information System (LIS), EMR, hospital Incident Report System (RL Solutions), email, internet, Microsoft Office and data management software.
- Knowledge of employee progressive disciplinary steps, collective bargaining agreements, and Human Resources Leaves of Absence (FMLA, KinCare, Worker's Compensation, etc.)
- Possess knowledge of and applies the principles of Quality Control, Quality Assurance, and Continuous Quality Improvement.

Department Overview In support of UCDHS' mission of "improving lives and transforming health care", the Department of Pathology and laboratory medicine provides high quality diagnostic and therapeutic care to patients, both UCDHS' and its affiliates, through the examination and interpretation of tissue, blood and other body fluids. Our laboratory is accredited by the College of American Pathology (CAP) and is located in three distinct facilities: the Surgery and Emergency Services Pavilion (SESP), the Pathology Building, and the Specialty Testing Center. The Department is one of the largest ancillary services with gross annual revenues in excess of $450m, expenses of $60m, and more than 250 employees across 18 distinct units and accounts/cost centers.
