Job Summary

The Neuro critical care Physician Assistant provides specialized patient care and guidance to neurosurgical patients and their families. Direct patient care is provided to inpatients in the hospital, including obtain history and physical, pre-and post-operative management, order and follow-up of laboratory and radiology studies, telephone triage of patient phone calls, attendance at M & M and QA conferences as required.

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

  • California Licensed Physicians Assistant (PA)
  • National Certification as a Physician Assistant
  • Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Certificate within 3 months of hire
  • American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross Basic Life Support (BLS), or UC Davis Health CPR
  • American Heart Association (AHA) Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
  • Emergency Neurological Life Support (ENLS) within three (3) months of hire
  • Graduation with a Master's degree from an accredited Physician Assistant Program
  • At least 2 years of recent PA experience in neurosurgery, critical care, neurocritical care or neurology.
  • Demonstrated ability for positive interaction with medical/nursing staff and other members of the multidisciplinary team.
  • Able to meet PA competencies.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Judgment skills to effectively meet the needs of patients.
  • Self-direction and organizational skills to function in an independent role.
  • Ability to apply relevant theories and concepts to clinical practice.
  • Ability to cope with personal stress experienced by team members, other professionals, and caretakers.
  • Ability to see well enough to read gauges and identify injuries.

Department Overview

The Department of Neurological Surgery is a clinical specialty unit in the School of Medicine that provides direct patient care, training and graduate medical education, and basic and applied medical research programs. It serves as a referral center for neurosurgical patients in northern California.

Department Specific Job Scope

The Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) are board certified nurse practitioners and physician assistants who practice in collaboration with neurosurgeons and neurointensivists, providing a team approach in the management of patients' health care. APPs are licensed medical professionals who can examine, test, treat and prescribe medications for patients. Our APPs practice both in the hospital and in our clinics.

The goal of advanced practice providers is to ensure continuity of care and increase access to neurosurgical treatment. They also provide patient and family education regarding diagnoses and treatment plans. They work closely with your doctor to deliver high quality care.
