Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Daily supervision of direct reports, addressing employee performance and document as needed, draft and present performance reviews at least annually or as required.
- Work with and/or at the direction of the assistant production manager to identify and implement tools or processes to optimize output and performance to meet the department goals and KPI's.
- Ensures the proper raw materials are continuously loaded, this also includes weighing and adding color and other additives, able to calibrate loaders by percentage or weight. Can detect flaws in raw materials and production equipment and possess the ability to make required mechanical or material changes to ensure quality and specifications are met.
- Reviews work orders; assembles tooling accordingly including extrusion heads, dies, pins, sizing sleeves, screens and extruder screws as needed. Uses a full range of hand tools including wrenches, hammers, screwdrivers, saws, and pliers to set up tooling on machines.
- Sets up water tank, vacuum sizing tanks and calibrators, puller and saw according to work order requirements. Makes all necessary line adjustments including startup, temperature profile adjustments, resin changeovers and shutdowns.
- Visually inspects finished part for defects continually during extrusion process, adjusts extruder, puller or saw as necessary to keep parts within specifications. Adjusts zone and die heat temperatures, line speed and vacuum pressure as necessary. Uses judgment and knowledge of plastics and their reaction to heat to determine what adjustments are required.
- Inspects and measures finished parts. Uses various measuring devices such as scale, caliper, micrometer, dial indicator, Go / No Go Gauges, and tape measure. Records data on inspection sheet. Determines if part meets specifications.
- Maintains accurate records of production set-ups, extrusion production data sheets, statistical process control and/or inspection report sheets.
- Determines most effective packing method and ensure proper packaging of finished parts. This will include the construction of framed skids, banding cardboard, other packaging materials and finished product with metal or plastic bands.
- Completes and submits work orders to the assistant production manager.
- Makes vacuum seals and able to setup bulkhead seals.
- Communicates with direct reports and other team members to relay status of in-process jobs and machines.
- Follows all prescribed quality inspection requirements.
- The extrusion supervisor will train new employees on operating the extrusion line, and other equipment.
- Experienced forklift operator with current certification or the ability to obtain one through company offered training program.
Education and Experience
- High school diploma required. College degree in associated field preferred.
- Some Six Sigma or LEAN training or experience desired.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office
- Previous experience operating a plastics extrusion line.
- Supervisory experience required.
