Reuters is seeking an experienced and talented editor to drive U.S. news coverage for our national news file, including stories ranging from natural disasters and school shootings to national politics. This editor will directly manage several reporters located across the United States and will focus on the big news stories of the day and week while also developing enterprise work on deeper issues such as education, religion or criminal justice. In addition to a deep background in text journalism, the successful candidate must be versed in video and photojournalism and adept at coordinating closely across formats.

Candidates should have a strong knowledge of U.S. general and political news, with a proven track record of covering major breaking events, deploying staff and shaping news coverage, under intense competitive pressure and deadlines. Experience in working closely with reporters to develop enterprise stories is a plus. This job will require the editor to work at least two evenings/nights each week, overseeing the late U.S. news file.

The position reports to the Editor, U.S. General News, and will be based in one of the following bureau locations: New York, Washington DC, Chicago or Houston.

About the Role

As Editor, U.S. News/Cross Format, you will:

  • Drive coverage of major breaking news stories across the political and general file including working in fast-moving and competitive situations, juggling numerous story angles and deploying staff.
  • Coordinate closely with other editors and with teams working in pictures and video on coverage of stories
  • Develop and edit strong and original enterprise on subjects potentially including national politics, education, religion or criminal justice.
  • Manage reporters creatively to ensure their growth and development alongside the needs of the file

About You

You will be a good fit for the role of Editor, U.S. News/Cross Format, if you have:

  • Deep understanding of U.S. political and general news
  • At least five years of editing experience at a major news organization
  • A strong work ethic, team spirit and excellent organizational skills
  • Strong journalistic and management skills
  • Experience working closely with colleagues in pictures and video on coverage of stories.

Eligible office location(s) for this role include one or more of the following: New York City, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and/or Irvine, CA; McLean, VA; Washington, DC. The base compensation range for the role in any of those locations is $109,690 - $203,710. For any eligible US locations, unless otherwise noted, the base compensation range for this role is $95,200 - $176,800. This role may also be eligible for an Annual Bonus based on a combination of enterprise and individual performance. Base pay is positioned within the range based on several factors including an individual's knowledge, skills and experience with consideration given to internal equity. Base pay is one part of a comprehensive Total Reward program which also includes flexible and supportive benefits and other wellbeing programs.
