Responsibilities

The Capital Markets Banker is a key revenue-generating role responsible for sourcing, structuring, and closing complex transactions. This individual will lead client acquisition efforts, deepen relationships across ONB's product suite, and drive fee income through strategic market participation. The role requires strong sales acumen, deep market knowledge, and the ability to navigate sophisticated financial structures while maintaining a client-first mindset.

Salary Range

The salary range for this position is $77,900 - $153,000. The base salary indicated for this position reflects the compensation range applicable to all levels of the role across the United States. Actual salary offers within this range may vary based on a number of factors, including the specific responsibilities of the position, the candidate's relevant skills and professional experience, educational qualifications, and geographic location.

Key Accountabilities

Client Acquisition & Relationship Management

    Source and originate Capital Markets loan transactions across new and existing clients.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with banking partners, syndication desks, brokers, clients, and financial sponsors.
  • Leverage ONB's full suite of capabilities-including treasury management, swaps, FX, 401(k), and 1834-to deepen client relationships and drive cross-sell opportunities.
  • Communicate ONB's appetite and participate in primary market offerings with counterparties.

Sales Execution & Fee Generation

  • Negotiate, structure, and close complex Capital Markets transactions.
  • Generate fee income through syndication fees, upfront fees, OID, amendment fees, unused fees, and IB/Capital Markets partnership fees.
  • Thoughtfully evaluate risk/return across the portfolio, providing relative value analysis to optimize returns.

Loan Trading & Market Participation

  • Trade bank loans on a secondary market basis with approved counterparties, managing exposure and mitigating risk.
  • Use ClearPar to review loan sales and trading documentation, ensuring timely closings and accurate compensation.
  • Close primary and secondary trades in coordination with loan closers and operations, ensuring systems reflect accurate loan terms.

Credit Collaboration & Structuring

  • Collaborate with underwriting to prepare credit presentations, amendments, waivers, and other transaction-related documentation.
  • Utilize credit skills to identify transaction strengths and weaknesses, designing structural features to mitigate risk.
  • Coordinate funding processes with loan operations, including guidance-line draws, boarding data sheets, and tracking.

Qualifications and Education Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Finance, Business, or related field and/or H.S. Diploma/GED with equivalent experience.
  • 7+ years of experience in Commercial Banking, Capital Markets, or leveraged finance.
  • Proven track record in sales or Credit, client relationship management, and deal execution.
  • Strong understanding of loan syndications, secondary market trading, and financial sponsor dynamics.
  • Excellent negotiation, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Familiarity with systems such as ClearPar and loan operations processes.

Key Measures of Success/Key Deliverables:

  • Volume and quality of originated transactions.
  • Growth in client relationships and cross-sell penetration.
  • Fee income generated across Capital Markets products.
  • Timely and accurate execution of trades and closings.
  • Positive feedback from clients, partners, and internal stakeholders.

Capital Markets Banker roles may vary between II, III, or Senior - this position may be filled at a different level depending on the candidate's qualifications and relevant experience. Factors may include but are not limited to:

  • Depth and breadth of prior and/or related commercial lending, business development, commercial credit and portfolio management in Capital Markets
  • Number of consistent years with success and track record in relationship management and sourcing, originating, and deal structuring specializing in Capital Markets (or similar role) at the Bank or at another financial institution
  • Demonstrated and proven ability to work through complex Capital Markets transactions and/or other unique situations
  • Well connected, known in market/region/industry, and influential in acquiring, deepening, and maintaining profitable relationships through negotiation, structuring, prospecting and enhancing existing relationships specializing in Capital Markets
  • Prior experience formally or informally coaching and mentoring peers while utilizing leadership skills
  • Agile and prior proficiency to adapt if/when changes in business practices and/or approach and broader market and industry conditions are needed
