Pay Range

$120,510 - $178,464 Annually

$120,510 - $147,564 Annually at the 304.1 level

$145,740 - $178,464 Annually at the 304.2 level

This is the lowest to highest salary we in good faith believe we would pay for this role at the time of this posting.Pay will not be below any applicable local minimum wage. An employee's position within the salary range will be based on several factors including, but not limited to, specific competencies, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, seniority, geographic location, performance, and business or organizational needs.This position will be filled at eitherlevel based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Job Description

We have an opening for a Disposal Operations Technician. You will ensure compliance with State and Federal regulations as they apply to the shipping of hazardous and radioactive materials. You will determine optimal treatment and disposal options for LLNL generated waste streams and maintain shipping schedules to meet important performance and regulatory requirements. This position is in the Radioactive and Hazardous Waste Management Program (RHWM) within the Strategic Deterrence Directorate.

This position requires full-time on-site presence due to the nature of the work.

This position will be filled at eitherlevel based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.

In this role you will

  • Interpret State and Federal regulations (e.g., Department of Transportation (DOT), Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA)) as they apply to the shipping and disposal of hazardous and radioactive wastes.
  • Complete preparation of waste shipments by analyzing and interpreting complex chemical and radiological data to determine DOT classification for hazardous, radioactive and/or mixed wastes.
  • Prepare and process documentation to meet all types of waste disposal and transportation requirements including land disposal restriction (LDR) notifications, manifests, bill of ladings, state notifications, and California Highway Patrol notifications.
  • Perform quality assurance reviews of other team members' documentation for hazardous, non-hazardous, radioactive and mixed waste shipments.
  • Assign wastes to various disposal facilities based upon acceptance criteria, scheduling needs, and pricing.
  • Develop, review, and maintain procedures and training associated with waste disposal activities.
  • Provide advanced shipping support to all types of waste generated at LLNL.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional job responsibilities, at the 304.2 level

  • Coordinate large scale projects including extensive deactivation and decommissioning projects involving large volumes of waste
  • Identify problems, direct personnel, plan, and participate on special projects pertaining to shipping and disposal activities.
  • Interpret complex chemical and radiological data to determine proper waste characterization and to identify treatment and disposal options.

Qualifications
  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Qlevel security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
  • Bachelor's degree in an environmental or related scientific field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Fundamental knowledge of State and Federal regulations as they apply to waste disposal, with experience in their application (e.g., manifesting, LDR notifications).
  • Experience applying DOT classification to wastes.
  • Advanced understanding of proper labeling, placarding, and packaging of hazardous materials along with proper load segregation and securement.
  • Experience interpreting chemical and/or radiological data to determine compliance with offsite Treatment, Storage and Disposal Facilities (TSDF) waste acceptance criteria.
  • Experience communicating with off-site TSDFs and completing required TSDF waste acceptance paperwork.
  • Advanced organization skills, attention to detail, accuracy, and follow through.
  • Ability to successfully complete all Federal, State, LLNL and DOT training requirements.

Additional qualifications at the 304.2 level

  • Advanced experience interpreting complex chemical and/or radiological data to determine waste characterization and treatment methods.
  • Experience directing personnel in the completion of specific tasks to facilitate the accomplishment of overall project objectives.
  • Advanced knowledge of State and Federal (e.g., RCRA, DOT) regulations governing the management, transportation, and disposal of hazardous and/or radioactive wastes.

Security Clearance

This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.If you are selected, wewill initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if youmeet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. Also, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.
